Samai Lodge

Samai Ocean View Lodge Spa offers a new concept of healthy traveling services where you can experience the environment, eco-tourism activities, cultural exchange, healthy food in first class settings. Here you'll enjoy the serene splendor of the cordillera mountains, pacific ocean and rain forest all in one place! You will find the extraordinary peace and tranquility of Ecuador, that is still largely untouched by civilization, rejuvenating your spirit and give you a new lease on life.

A good place for a personal holiday or a small group retreat! Well done food, ocean breezes and golden sunsets.

Samai Lodge is a lovely little place run mostly by Tanya, the Ecuadorian half of an international couple. The accommodations were comfortable and the site was lovely. It is about 1 km from the beach and several hundred meters up a hill. So it overlooks the ocean and affords welcome breezes and gorgeous sunsets. There lots of small areas to sit around the place so it is easy to find a solitary space. The main building houses the dining room and a space that can be used for retreats. (I was the main speaker at a yoga retreat here.) The dining room offers attentive service and good quality preparation. Vegetarian and vegan diets are easily accommodated. I suspect other special diets can be arranged. As an example, whenever red onion appears in a salad, it has been rinsed in cold water to remove the biting sulphuric compounds. Not many places take that precaution. Spa services are available, both the usual sort and also practices and treatments from indigenous traditions. Before opening this place Tanya was a journalist who worked mostly with indigenous people and her knowledge of the traditions is considerable. We discovered that she lived 10 years in my city and we planned to meet up when they are visiting.

Good value, nice location

Reviewed By 12SNina

It is well kept B&B close to the beach. Service is pleasant and helpful. Our room was not too big but still enough. Ok wifi, flat TV, good AC. Everything was clean, saw some ants but not too many. We had refrigerator in the room and you can fill your water bottles. No problems with this drinking water. Good breakfast served on terrace and if you say your time ahead, no waiting. You can choose between eggs, pancake and waffles. Only issue was the neighbour's rooster which made lot of noise during the night. All in all recommended place and would stay again.

Comfy room but..

Reviewed By Nicole T

You actually get Directv and a comfy and clean room but... 1. No wifi at the room 2. Payed extra for ocean view and there was not an ocean view!!! (you can actually only see a little bit of the sand) 3. I know breakfast is free, but seriously two pieces of bread and half an egg? 4. Service was ok. It is nice, but I really think they could fix the whole place up. Garden was a mess.

Cuna Luna Sea Lodge

Cuna Luna Sea Lodge was built by the Pacific Coast seashore, and was designed to offer its guests a true breakthrough nature and outdoor life by the sea. It was conceived as part of an initiative to revitalize the small coastal community of San José, offering work, learning and development alternatives to their inhabitants. All our rooms have been designed and built with natural materials such as wood and palms, We have as well watched bioclimatic criteria, reason for which no artificial climatization is needed, avoiding noise and air pollution. Nevertheless, still offer 2 air conditioneo rooms. 8 of our 12 rooms have beachfront terraces overlooking the fantastic 10 kms San José beach. Our Restaurant is Open all year long, with a capacity of 40 guests and a fantastic panoramic view of one of the most beautiful beaches on the Ecuadorian coast . It offers an excellent and varied cuisine specializing in seafood, carefully prepared regarding high hygiene and quality standards.

Secluded and quiet

Reviewed By EduardUtrecht

This place received both good and bad reviews and we would like to add some as objective as possible comments. You should be aware that Cuna Luna is not in Montañita, and not even in the nearby town of Olón. It is about a 10 minute drive from Cuna Luna to Olón, and about 15 tot 20 minutes to Montanita. We stayed here (couple with baby) for four nights in low season and were practically the only guests. That made it a quiet and tranquil stay, just as we wanted. Cuna Luna is one of the few hotels right on the beach, you walk out of your cabin onto the beach. That is a great advantage. The rooms and cabins are basic, wooden constructions. Rooms are one above another, so with full occupation, it will be noisy. Don’t expect any luxury at Cuna Luna. There are no televisions, no jacuzzi, no swimming pool, no air conditioning (in our room), although there is wifi. We didn’t expect or wanted any luxury of that kind, so for us it was fine, but you should be aware of this if your taste is otherwise. We occupied a suite that has a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. It was spacious and just behind the single-room cabins so we were didn’t have much direct ocean views. Still good enough to sleep with the sounds of the waves, although barking dogs during the night were doing their best to sound louder than the ocean. I suppose if you book one of the rooms directly at the ocean, the dogs won’t bother you. It must be taken into account that Cuna Luna is not in the town of Olón itself, but in a community called San José, an almost 10 minutes drive north from Olón and about 15 minutes out of Montañita. Since there is nothing to see or do in San José, you depend on your own means of transportation or public buses to enjoy Olón or Montañita. Take that into account, because travelling between Olón and Cuna Luna is easy with your own vehicle, but might be exhausting by public transport. The place itself is well maintained and currently there are some constructions taking place to build some more cabins. However there are good and less good things to say about our stay. Towels and bed linen were refreshed daily, and attention by the staff is good. On our arrival however, we found the kitchen in our department dirty and it was cleaned upon our request. Although not very thoroughly, and there was still some mould in the fridge and coffee stains in the coffee machine, food rests on the knives. The rest of the apartment was quite clean and kept clean during our stay. However, it didn’t have curtains, although the other rooms do have curtains. Breakfast is almost every day the same, consisting of a few bread rolls, eggs, marmalade, juice and fruits.. Moreover, breakfast is served from 8.30 onwards but we tried and got to eat a bit earlier. On the third day we were surprised with some extra yoghurt and granola. The mosquito screens in the rooms are not very effective, as the wooden construction leaves small openings between doors , windows and walls that permit small mosquitos to enter the room at night. So take into account the location, in a small community without any restaurants or other touristic sites. Situated right at the beach is a great plus. In terms of price-quality-relation we found Cuna Luna a bit overpriced, specifically the food in the restaurant is expensive. Room prices ($60/night for a basic double room including breakfast and ocean view) are relatively high as was the price for the apartment ($ 80/night). In the town of Olón you will find a decent double room for 25 dollars a night; so the beachfront location of Cuna Luna doubles your price.... All in all the place lacks a bit of dedication to guests and a real good focus on clients service, although it is worthwhile if you are looking for beachfront tranquillity without much other tourists around.

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Reviewed By juliettezaa

I booked a two night stay at this hotel for my sister and my little niece, when deciding where to book my sister txt the owner to request an early check in and late check out. The lady agreed so that was the reason why we decided to book at this location plus we liked the pictures ( we should have read the reviews first ) anyway today my sister was asked to leave at Noon she spoke to the woman who owns this hotel and told her that the agreement was to have also a late check out, the woman was very rude and unprofessional cause if a customer is requesting something and the business is willing to provide or agreed to provide it should be fulfilled. To me this is very unprofessional very unfair to the customer who should be always treated with respect. Thanks to this lady’s husband my sister and my little niece weren’t literally kicked out of the place by this woman who I think don’t care about her customers as long as you already pay her she won’t keep what was agreed when booking. Plus the place wasn’t as it shows in pictures anyway the worst experience ever. Won’t be booking at this location again. Once again thanks to the very rude and unprofessional owner’s husband who forced her to keep what she agreed before we booked at her hotel my sister wasn’t kicked out with her little child at this remote location. HIGHLY HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED !!!

GREAT FOOD, SERVICE & VIEW

Reviewed By Cuencathom

Located near la punta (the point) at the northern end of Montanita, this place is a little difficult to get to, but worth the effort. This is "surfer's paradise" in Montanita with plenty of activity to watch while enjoying craft beer, ciders & interesting menu options . . . all in terrific surroundings, right on the beach. The sushi here is first-rate . . . we tried several varieties including tuna, salmon, octopus & avocado. Also couldn't resist the sashimi . . . fresh & expertly served in wooden vessels shaped like small boats. Ice cold beers & ciders paired perfectly with our seafood feast. We'll return first chance we get . . . try this place, you'll be impressed !

Luis!!

Reviewed By _jameshill5656

Spent 10 days or so at Luis' and thoroughly enjoyed his company and property. The rooms are rustic and simple, but they are more than comfortable and spotlessly clean. All rooms have mossie nets, and in truth, they are needed as there are a few in town. The outdoor communal area is really lovely. There is a well equipped kitchen and comfortable seats and hammocks. Luis is a fantastic host - warm hearted, funny and generous. He showed us around town when we arrived and we often had a sunset beer or two at the great bar overlooking the beach (Beach Bar) or later at Playa de James. Manglaralto is a quiet and relaxed village about 25 mins walk along the beach from Montanita. Its beach is very quiet and beautiful (and less affected by the tides than elsewhere), and if you want a party, it only takes 5 mins in a taxi to Montanita. We wish we could have returned before heading to Peru. An absolute gem of a host in Louis and a superb welcoming little village.
