Delicious dishes & Excellent white hot spring

Reviewed By PeterTokyoPeter

Room is larger than what I expected. 8 tatami mats plus alpha space is so enough for 2 people. Sulfurous hot spring relaxed us well. "Jigoku" is 15 minutes on foot from this hotel. We enjoyed "Jigoku" hiking before breakfast. Dinner & breakfast is so delicious for us. In addition, hotel people's hospitality is so nice.

Fabulous stay

Reviewed By KI-NRT

Given how far away the island of Kyushu is from Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto, my perception in the past was that of a backwater that lacked sophistication. After numerous trips to all of the Prefectures the past few years, I've come to the realization that it's rich in history, culture, nature and - yes - a wonderful gastronomic identify. Unzen Kyushu Hotel is yet another example of a Kyushu property offering a polished hard product, refined service levels and an incredible dining experience. The property was rebuilt from scratch several years ago, with visions of a modern boutique hotel but with contemporary furnishings with local art. They've done a wonderful job here - the buildings blend into the Unzen environment without dominating the landscape (it's right next to "Unzen Jigoku," aka "Unzen Hell" hot springs.) From most of the rooms as well as the lounge area, you're treated to a front-row seat to the views of Unzen Hell, complete with the strong sulphur smell (which we like, to be honest.) The grounds are immaculately maintained, and it really is a tranquil environment that is at harmony with the area at large. We chose to spend our 3 nights in one of the "Hanare" (detached and separate building) rooms since they provided more privacy and space, although it's at the expense of a view of Unzen Jigoku that other rooms offer. The Hanare room offers bedrooms that are segregated from the living room (a key for us), as well as both an indoor as well as outdoor (open-air) Onsen hot springs bath, which was wonderful. The other benefit of Hanare-staying guests - you get to dine in a separate area, and in a private room, which is important to us, especially during COVID times. As a bonus, for the entire time we were there, the wonderful manager of Unzen Kyushu Hotel (Mr. Taura) personally served us - what a treat! He's an encyclopedia of food knowledge (as well as the local ingredients), and was very enthusiastic in his work. One other major bonus of this hotel, which really delighted us.... the pace of the meals was the best we've ever experienced. Nowhere else have we enjoyed a 9+ course meal in 90 minutes. And it didn't feel rushed at all. It was perfectly paced. Your mileage will vary, and that will be the result of the attentive staff and kitchen, who are quietly monitoring the pace of your food consumption so that everything is served exactly when you'd like it to be. Unzen Kyushu Hotel offers a choice of Japanese and Western-Japanese fusion meals, both for dinner and breakfast. Given we were there for 3 nights, we went with Japanese - Fusion - Japanese, and we were happy with the choice. Everything was unique, varied and umami-filled, even for breakfast, and we felt the quality was up there with the best ryokans and hotels in Japan. By this time, we weren't surprised... Kyushu (and Nagasaki) has awesome seafood, vegetables and fruits (the latter two thanks to the fertile volcanic soil), so chefs have top-notch ingredients to play with. Something "simple" like an Abalone Steak with Abalone liver cream sauce was done to perfection.. it was perfectly cooked, and it was very flavorful without being rich or overpowering; it brought out the best in the Abalone meat. Speaking of meat, we had more than a few beef dishes throughout our time here, and never experienced anything but amazing quality Nagasaki beef. As an aside, we're learning that Wagyu does not start and end with Kobe Beef. On the contrary, we've had just as good (if not better) quality Matsuzaka, Tajima, Hida, Miyazaki, Kumamoto and other varieties of beef during our time in Japan - Kobe beef is marketed very effectively, but it's definitely not the end-all-be-all. Even something as basic as a rice dish (that comes at the end of the kaiseki meal) was much better than the norm. A simple "Matsutake Gohan" (Steamed rice with bamboo shoots) was amazing - we usually don't have more than a bite, since we're full by then (and are watching the carbs), but we wound up finishing an entire bowl of it - we couldn't stop! Breakfast was equally special. While we generally prefer Japanese breakfasts (and it was the case here as well), they did a wonderful job with the Western choices also. The Eggs Benedict, French Toast and the Japanese Sea Bream Meunière provided us with a great start to the day. Overall, we felt the contemporary but tasteful build of the property, combined with the elegant and friendly staff, comfortable rooms, wonderful Onsen quality and amazing food (with a choice of fusion or Japanese meals) resulted in an almost perfect stay at Unzen Kyushu Hotel.

Old and new

Reviewed By TWHK

I stayed in the new building of Fukudaya. The old building is more than 50 years old and the new building was completed in 2016 with only 7 rooms which have modern decorations. Besides, there is in-room outdoor onsen in every room. The outdoor public onsen of the ryokan is on the top floor of this new building. If you stay in the new building, the minibar is free and they refill it every day. If you go there from Nagasaki, you can take Nagasaki Keneibus. It takes around 1.5 hours. You can take off right in front of the ryokan. I stayed there for two nights. Their breakfast and dinner were quite nice. They will prepare dinner menus for you if you stay there for more than one night.

first impression will be "bad" but after good relax in the onsen all is forgotten. Parking available at 500 yen over night Check in fast - NO English. They have all details that you might need written on big cards in English. Room is very big. Nice varenda. However smell of smoke of cigarette. Amenities - ok. Wifi - ok The onsen is in next building so you need to pass via the reception area. Also this is old place but have big windows and if you in day time you can enjoy the view. We did not took breakfast so no comment. As it is very cheap and the target is onsen I believe it give best value

Haunted hotel with poor meals

Reviewed By erikaps105

I booked this hotel because it was stated as “new opened” on the booking site. When I arrived the hotel, I was shocked to see its outlook was really old. (I googled it in Japanese afterwards and noticed the hotel was actually opened in 1940s’ and only got some renewal after the hotel was bankrupt a few years before...) Staff was nice and we were arranged to a room with a nice view. I booked a Japanese and western room. The room is big and clean though the toilet is old and not so tidy. When I get into the room (about 5pm), I heard some noise from the window which I thought is made by wind. I didn’t give much thoughts at that moment. I went out for dinner in hotel and some walking afterwards. The dinner here is buffet which serves many different kinds of food. It looks good but tastes bad. After some walking, I went to the hot spring at the fifth floor. I doubt if it was really hot spring water though there’s sort of certificate showed in the hotel. When I got back to my room, the noise I heard before was still kept disturbing me for a whole night, it sounds like someone tried to draw my attention by making noises, it wasn’t some noise made by wind as I thought. I then realized it came both from window and wall. It never stopped until sunrise. I hardly slept much and felt bad so I went to breakfast earlier. The breakfast was horrible as the dinner before. The hotel check out time is 12:00 noon but I was hardly stayed for another minutes so I left at 8:00am and went for some sightseeing in Unzen. Seems many hotels in Unzen were no longer operating. I drove away to Obama before 10:30. I think the city was a bit haunted (the hotel is no doubt absolutely haunted). My legs were cramped since my car arrived hotel and it didn’t get better until I drove away from Unzen. Nagasaki is great but I won’t recommend anyone to stay overnight in Unzen city. The sight from Unzen Hell looks amazing and the cats there are adorable. Not much people other than sightseers and those who worked in Unzen.

Cosy

Reviewed By GrantTaylor25

5 stories high but quite small for an Onsen hotel. The 6th floor roof had 6 private bath rooms where you could reserve for an hour of indulging your body in the natural hot spring while looking out over the sea. Coffee was free but the food was not included so they recommended another place close by that had a very filling course of noodles, rice, tempura and sushi along with 2 tiny desserts of baked egg custard and green tea pudding. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean and functional. The main bath had an outside pool and also a sauna. I needed that to steam me so I could use the scrubbing lotion to get off all the dead skin on my legs. This prepared me for the long walk around the village the next day.

Heaven in Unzen

The best hotel I ever stay. I have stayed many hotels in the world, Unzen Kanko hotel is the best in terms of the service, food, building, surroundings. Because of historic rain, the train was cancelled, so we had to take a taxi from Nagasaki station. We arrived the hotel around the noon, as soon as the taxi open the door, the staff helped us to carry the bags, apologized for the bad weather, (you don't have to,it is not your fault!) Check-in was smooth and dinner time and breakfast were arranged at the time of check-in. The staff explained the hotels equipment, including the reading room, the movie room, and the game room. all the furniture, staircase, hall-room are well-maintained although the hotel is more than 100 year-old. We just relaxed in the room, open the window, listened birds sound, wind blowing, water sound. it was such valuable time. The hot spring was excellent. I think i took hot springs 4 times in my one-night stay. i woke up early and decided to go to run. It was 5:30 in the morning and the staff was cleaning brass bar. i bet you need make that effort to maintain this old as beautiful as new. I choose Japanese style dinner. With excellent hotel labeled Sake, every bit of dinner was tasty and high quality presentation. I don't know if you can get the same level of Japanese dinner somewhere else. With excellent service from the staff, beautiful hotel, quiet surrounding, i spent happy two days. You don't have to go out, just stay in the hotel makes you really happy.
