Nicest staff you’ll ever meet anywhere! Best in the area for foreigners on the cheap!

Reviewed By farisann

I stayed here during my volunteer program. The staff are insanely nice - they don’t speak much English, but you are guaranteed to be understood! They will try their best to help you. They are extremely accepting of foreigners (all of Dake Onsen is, I found) and really put their heart into their business. As for my room, it had a mini fridge, its own bathroom, and a western style bed. I’ve heard some foreigners complain about how stiff hotel/ryokan beds and futons can be, but I had no problems. Super comfy falling asleep to the running water outside. It also has a heating and air system. The onsen is basically just a humongous bathtub. The water has sulfur(?) in it from the mountain, so it’s a kind of cloudy milky color. They say it is good for your skin. Also, this means that whenever you run water in your room, itll smell like sulfur. It didn’t bother me though. Breakfast is great. there’s always rice, soup, onsen eggs, salad, and fruit but there will also be plates of vegetables, fish, or chicken depending on the day. I guess my only complaint is the shower...sometimes i wanted to get to bed ASAP so I’d shower in my room’s bathroom. It takes a while for the water to stabilize. It would sputter violently and the temperature will be hard control for 10+ mins. I’m guessing this is because I was on the 4th floor. Overall 9.5/10 experience, I recommend it to anyone staying for Ebisu or otherwise. I don’t know why anyone would stay in Fukushima or further when Dake Onsen is so close.

Kunugidaira Hotel

Poet Kotaro Takamura’s wife Chieko so loved the sky of Adatara that she called it “Honto-no-Sora.” The perfect location, nestled below this “Honto-no-Sora,” and sheltered by Mount Adatara. Fresh breezes, dazzling greenery, gentle birdsong... Coupled with the abundant hot springs gushing forth from the mountain. Relax in nature, with all that Adatara has to offer. Enjoy communing with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We stayed in this hotel as it was close to the start/finish point of a hiking event. Facilities are very much standard of its class. Service is excellent but it is usually good in Japan. Except for special events, there is limited foreign tourist. For those who want to explore Mt Adatara, this hotel is recommended

Simply the Best

If you are looking for a wonderful Japanese ryokan experience look no further. You will be the only non Japanese tourist at this location, maybe even in the whole town! We booked the Katakuri room. What a beautiful tatami room, it was spacious with it's own dining room and small lounge leading to the incredible private onsen. Speaking of the private onsen, it has got to be the hottest bath I've ever had. We've tried several onsen's and various ryokans and this one is by far the hottest. There was a cold water tap to cool down the onsen, don't leave it on during your meal as it will cool it right down and you will have to take a cold plunge. Thankfully it warms up quickly. There are two public onsen's on site which alternate between male and female. Service is top notch. The staff is awesome. Come prepared, english is limited. The staff try really really hard and went out of their way to try and communicate even when it was difficult for them. With the use of various translators it always worked out. During our stay they always had someone at the front desk that was able to communicate in english. Food service was a real treat. You will have a traditional japanese meal. Our meal was very strong on seafood but the dinner also included beef. Bring cash or a master card. We tried to pay with 3 different Visa cards but they were always declined until we tried a Mastercard. We had trouble with visa in this part of Japan. There is free parking for the hotel. Honestly this was an amazing and immersive experience that I recommend to everyone.
