Amazing relaxing paradise stay

Reviewed By chrishA3804ME

A gorgeous former tea estate mansion. Felt like a private villa escape; gorgeous building; large bedrooms and an amazing pool. All set in a picture postcard setting of paradise. The house is set on a hill with tea plantations and herbs and fruits growing all around the hill sides. The staff here are great. The chef makes the best breastfasts (including lots of options for fussy Western kids). The evening meals are a full banquet with your table being coveted in different bowls of gorgeous food. I would recommend this escape to anyone; very easy to loose yourself with the tranquil sound of the birds amd the visual sights of paradise.

Sir John's Bungalow

Offering sweeping vistas of the North Eastern Knuckles mountain range, an area that is celebrated for its striking peaks, pristine waterways, bewitching cloud forests, and diverse flora and fauna, Sir John's Bungalow is situated at the threshold of a land before time.Built by the British during the colonial era as a residence for the Superintendent of the 1,300 acre Laggala tea estate, the Bungalow was once the holiday home of Sir John Kotalawala, the third Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. As the area is within the Knuckles conservation zone tea cultivation was abandoned thirty years ago allowing the jungle to reclaim its bounty. The planter's misfortune has thus become a dream come true for trekkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and all seekers of the sublime. During the dry months of June to September, elephants from the plains of the nearby Wasgamuwa National Park roam the estate in search of water and food. Wild buffaloes are in abundance, with leopards and fishing cats making occasional nocturnal visits, and the sounds of the timid barking deer echoing in the surrounding forest. Committed to an ethos of environmentally sustainable hospitality, Sir John's Bungalow is carbon-neutral, harnessing solar energy for electricity and recycling all waste matter. ---------------------------------Accommodation Tastefully appointed with modern conveniences, Sir John's Bungalow also retains its old-world charms and comforts, including roaring fireplaces in the living and dining rooms. All bedrooms feature king-sized beds, elegant teak floors, and attached bathrooms with hot water showers. Both the Riverstone suite and Sir John's suite have four-legged cast iron bathtubs that can be filled for a long, relaxing soak.

We as family with our daughter and son were very much taken up by the authentic and genuine place and service. And it was really inspiring connection to the mother nature. Our hiking to the Pathana mini worlds end, our walk back to the bungalow was an historic one. Because we have never walked so much in a very long time, neither did we feel tired doing that. And on the 10th we walked to a view point and it was a breath taking scenery. We enjoyed our stay at Sir John's Bungalow. And looking forward to another such opportunity.

Heritage Bungalow in Tranquil Idylic Location coupled with Excellent Hospitality

Gammaduwa Bungalow is a wonderful heritage tea planter's home located high up in the Knuckles Mountains which has been lovingly renovated and restored by Dave and Sengli, who along with their team welcomed us while maintaining covid requirements. The local Sri Lankan cuisine amazing and creative with such as a young jackfruit curry which to a carnivore was so unbelievably like meat, along with other dishes and chutneys tingled my taste buds. The choice of either western or local cuisine, afternoon teas with fresh baked cakes and scones washed down with their own artisan tea was also something else. Enjoying the views whilst sitting out on the veranda being served breakfast afternoon tea or dinner feeling more like part of the family than a paying client, certainly one enters as a customer and leaves as a friend this my second trip to this relaxing hideaway in remote and dramatic mountainous tea plantation setting. Thanks David, Sengli and your team for yet again a welcoming and restful experience in this haven of peace, in the middle of the mountains and wish you all a wonderful and safe 2022 and the opportunity for you to welcome many more guests to enjoy the wonderful experience and many activities that are on offer as part of the Gammaduwa Experience I chose to just relax.

Back To Nature

This is an Eco friendly camp. Our tents were perched 4 metres off the ground and accessed by a ladder. There are two double tents set each end of a sturdy platform. These are built for an actual booking and removed until another one. It was a great experience with top staff - 6 in all. They were knowledgeable, polite and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner on the edge of the river where a brazier was lit to keep the crocodiles at bay. The table was set with a linen cloth, quality utensils and candles. The eating area was further enhanced by burning torched. All our meals were of high standard except for the two picnics served on safari, fruit in polystyrene and boxes of juice, carried in p,astic bags. That was the only let down. We saw many exotic birds, water buffalos, lots of small exotic wildlife, families of baby quails, monitor lizards, monkeys galore and peacocks dancing in front of the jeep, but only a couple of elephants. A word of warning, the ladder is not for people with disabilities and the jeep is tricky to get in and out of.
