10 Cultural Tours in Singapore That You Shouldn't Miss

September 11, 2021 Giuseppe Pratt

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

Because we are currently not able to travel outside of Singapore, we decided to explore Singapore through someone else's perspective. We searched for some fun experiences on AirBNB and thought that this tour looked the best. Families should know that even if you have a child, through AirBNB, you have to pay full price for your child to join the tour. After paying, I realized that they would not give me the discount that is offered for children on their own site. I do think that something could be done about that situation and this is the only reason the rating is 'very good' and not 'excellent'. Richard was extremely kind and knowledgeable. We had a great time talking with him and experiencing some familiar and unfamiliar foods. The tour gave us a great range of foods found in Singapore and also some choices along the way. Richard also took some great pictures of us and he sent us promptly after the tour. We enjoyed his company and he was always willing to answer our questions as we ate or walked around; however, he also gave us some space during the tour to eat and talk as a family. I would be willing to check out some other tours with Richard as our guide, but I would definitely go through the company site so that I can get the child discount.

Singaporeans originated from different countries and cultures, and this is what gives us our unique identity today. With this tour, we aim to take visitors beyond the city, on a cultural tour of the island. We begin in the local neighborhood of Ang Mo Kio, with a little known hobby that transcended the kampong era: Bird Singing. Brighten your morning with melodious chirps, followed by a visit to the local ‘Hawker Centre’ for coffee like a true local. The local exploration continues with a visit to a wet market and a hawker centre. After visiting the first neighborhood, we will proceed to another neighborhood, "Toa Payoh". Here, we will see the hustle and bustle of a local town centre. We will see an interesting "Tree Shrine" and we will also get to visit a HDB showflat. HDB Flats are public housings where 80% of the local population stays in. At the end of the tour, we can guarantee that all our guests will know everything about Singapore and the lifestyle of the locals.

Inclusions: Coffee and/or Tea, Air-conditioned vehicle, Licensed Local Tour Guide

So often we associate these words with the ignominious surrender to the Japanese on 15 February 1942, but the surrender by the Japanese on 12 September 1945 is an equally important date in the story of WWII in Singapore. We will briefly explore the old 1930s Army buildings at Beach Road and cross to Raffles Hotel. It was often used by the Japanese during the Occupation—when it was known as Syonan Ryokan, incorporating ‘syonan’ (“Light of the South”), the Japanese name for occupied Singapore, and ‘ryokan,’ the name for a traditional Japanese inn and was the site of an infamous incident in August 1945. We will then walk to the far side of the Padang to see various war related memorials and look back to the old City Hall, now part of the National Gallery, where the actual surrender by the Japanese Lord Mountbatten and the other Allies took place on 12 September 1945. We will visit to actual “surrender room,” ie the City Chamber and the steps on which Mountbatten made his speech.

Inclusions: Your tour will be escorted by a passionate Singapore WWII team guide , Audio listen sets are used so everyone can hear their guide clearly and maintain social distance

Exclusions: Please note that a minimum of 2 guests is needed for the tour to operate

We’ll take you to some of those nooks and crannies you may have missed. It's a light, leisure stroll with plenty of shade along the way, as we discover the paradox of Singapore's "hardware" developing at a lightning pace vs while some of the "software" are clearly trailing behind. We'll talk about anything under the sun!
