Lotte Arai Resort

The city of Myoko is located just 2 hours from Tokyo by bullet train, as well as Niigata Airport by car. Lotte Arai Resort lies with scenic lands including a mountain range that starts with Mt. Myoko and extends all the way to the Sea of Japan, and rice fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. Within the abundance of nature surrounding Lotte Arai Resort, adults and children alike will be able to enjoy both Japan's longest zip line and the Tree Adventure courses. In the pure white of the winter season, you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding on slopes that boast the highest snowfall amount and some of the finest powder in all of Japan. Our guest rooms are as comfortable and calm as mountain villas, yet boast hospitality of the highest quality. Rounding it all out is the local foods, sake, and culture that you'll experience nowhere else.

Bad organisation

Reviewed By yrhr

We were clearly disappointed. It is understaffed or badly organized, or both. I think they are not ready to cop with covid properly and should better stay closed rather than disappointing their customers. Worst point : Waiting time for check in and to access restaurants was very long. One day, even after getting a table (which took 20 mn), we had to wait almost 50 mn to get our breakfast....Food was globally ok but disappointing for the price. We were supposed to get sun protection in our package ... They said they will bring it to our room ... it never came ... We had to claim it the day after. We were supposed to get a 1000 yen coupon because we did not request room cleaning the first day... We never received it ...Globally a lot of employees seem to be “lost”, hesitant, not knowing precisely what to do... Those are not big issues but when it comes with the other issues it becomes annoying for a resort of this standing.. When we did the check out, they forgot mini bar consumption ...So I told them to add it on the bill... and I mentioned that I did not receive the 1000 yens coupon.... They then asked to wait for them to check if it was “true” !!! (me not receiving the coupon...). We went through so much waiting during our stay, especially at restaurants....plus the lack of trust, this behavior was really humiliating and not acceptable (fyi my bill was 180 000 yens ... we are not cheating for 1000 yens especially after voluntarily asking them to add mini bar on the bill)... I couldn't hide my great dissatisfaction. The person at the front desk finally understood that their approach was probably not the right one and addressed the bill issue positively and offered us some cookies...But what an effort to be heard ...... In short, this hotel certainly has good points (beautiful site, beautiful room, pleasant swimming pool) but the service and the current organization are not at all up to the task. Several visitors have visibly observed the same thing as me.

Well located, nicely decorated, but definitely NOT LUXURY

I must confess that I could not decide whether to give these apartments a 2 (poor) or a 3 (average). I settled on a 3 because they are well located in the town, but not too long a hike uphill to the slopes and the apartments are reasonably well designed. They are fairly neutral in decor and make great use of the small space. There were some curious decisions made in their design though; such as only putting underfloor heating in the kitchen. I would assume that this was due to budget constraints, but even so, one would have thought that they would have chosen to heat the bathrooms if hard choices had to be made to come in under budget. There is decent internet coverage and it's easy to use your Netflix account on the TV. A great plus was the washing machine and dryer outside of our apartment. I assume that it was meant for the entire building, as we often found other people's laundry in there, but even so, it was a huge bonus, especially as there were not enough towels and no linen changes. The restaurants and bar in the building were also very convenient. The breakfast at the restaurant was delicious, if you had the time to wait for it. Even when you arrive at opening time, you are likely to face a long wait (e.g. 45 minutes for a bowl of muesli). The restaurant staff were excellent but there were not enough of them, and they were obviously exhausted. Please note that breakfast is included in the daily rate for the Lodge but not for the 'Luxury Apartments' (but you do get one free breakfast per stay - 8 nights in our case). The bar was very popular in the evening. We never experienced the Teppanyaki restaurant because Brad made it clear that children were not welcome, even when we were booking the entire place. He suggested that we leave them in the room and eat without them. We have become accustomed to compact accommodation in Japan, so packed accordingly. What took us by surprise here was the lack of customer service. One of the reasons for booking accommodation owned by English speaking owners was that we don't speak Japanese, so hoped to rely on them to help us with reservations. They did so with ski passes and ski lessons, but refused to book restaurants or tours for us. Brad said that he had already helped one of our group with her restaurant reservations (we had booked the entire lodge and all of the apartments), so that the rest of us would have to make our own. Fortunately, we had friends staying in more customer friendly lodges in town, who managed to make bookings for all of us. The worst part, however, was the cleanliness. The apartment appeared clean when we first went in, but we soon realised that there were bins that had not been emptied, papers of previous guests left on shelves and empty drinks cans in a couple of corners. In addition, we were not given enough towels for each guest. We brought this to the attention of the front desk a few times and eventually cleaned the mess ourselves. As I said, we were lucky enough to have access to a washing machine to help overcome the towel problem. By day 3, after multiple requests, each of us was given our own towel. These were never changed over the 8 nights. When we asked about this, Brad proudly told us that they were luxury apartments, not serviced apartments. However, we were the lucky ones. One of the children in the other 4 bedroom apartment was unwell and vomited on her sheets. When her parents asked at the front desk for the sheets to be changes (& offered to pay), they came home, relieved to see that the bed had been made for the girl to get some rest. She immediately realised that something was not quite right and that the bed smelt unpleasant. When the sheets were pulled back, they were shocked to learn that they had simply been turned around and not replaced. So, we will not be returning, but would suggest that if anyone is keen to stay at this location that they consider the basic but better value Lodge rather than the so called 'Luxury Apartments'. The owner needs to realise that luxury is about more than design, without service and the hospitality that had made Japan one of our favourite destinations, there is no luxury.

Best place to stay in Hakuba

Reviewed By yeti4900

Had an amazing stay here, the apartment is super clean and spacious. It was the perfect place to stay with a group of friends. It’s also walking distance to some restaurants and very close to Happo-One resort. Dave and Takami were so lovely and helpful. They gave us lifts to the ski resorts in Hakuba Valley and also came to pick us up after we were done for the day. They also gave us lifts to restaurants and the supermarket too. The apartment also had sleds and there was a small hill for sledding in front of the building, which was great fun after a day of snowboarding. Would highly recommend staying here, it was one of the best hospitality experiences!

Bob is the best.

Reviewed By JaminLloyd1

Not going to lie, I felt a little nervous when we first arrived. The place looked a little rough around the edges from the outside, but the nerves were quickly forgotten. The rooms were fine and they had everything we needed. The room had a great view of the mountain but as most of the other reviews have pointed out, it's the host Bob that makes this place. One morning he bought us up bread that his wife and freshly baked. another morning it was a waffle mixture and maker. Every day he took us out to the mountains and bought us back in the evening. He was such a wonderful person and we would definitely come back and stay with him.
