Lovely spring break

Reviewed By Vicki86001

This was our first trip to the DR and we wanted to avoid the large all-inclusive resorts. My husband and I stayed 6 nights with our 14 year old daughter. We stayed in an independent villa with a small plunge pool. We flew into Santa Domingo and hired a diver, Marcos, who Sarah arranged. I would highly recommend doing this. We was an excellent, safe driver and spoke perfect English, but also was very kind in letting me practice my Spanish. He was very tolerant in listening to and answering my husband’s multitude questions. The food at the hotel was very good. We also enjoyed having a kitchen to cook our own breakfasts as needed. It is a short walk to a very lovely beach with calm waters (Playita). A short walk to restaurants and shops if you need to buy groceries or essentials. One day we took an ATV ride to Playa Rincon and Playa Bremmen. I rode with Alfredo from the hotel and my husband and daughter rode on another ATV. Would also recommend doing this day trip. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly, professional, and kind. It would serve you well to know a little Spanish, but all the staff were very patient with my limited Spanish. We felt very safe in the hotel, in the town of Las Galeras, walking to the beach and also at all the beaches. Sarah, the owner was a delight to work with. I didn’t catch everyone’s names, but also enjoyed Alfredo and Luis Miguel. Beautiful grounds and very friendly people everywhere we went.

It's very well set up. we had a lower room with a kitchenette, and it was very comfortable. air conditioning, good wifi. I liked that it was in a very quiet area, about a 15-20 minute walk to the main road (getting there along the coastal path is very pleasant).

Beware! Read Carefully! Bring cash! Be ready for the owner!

I have been to the Dominican Republic more then 25 times and have traveled the entire country from one end to the other. I have stayed in many resorts, guest houses, Airbnb‘s all over the island. With that said, the listing for this guest house/hotel/hostel is VERY misleading. The pictures on Priceline clearly show an air conditioner in the room. It does not say anywhere in the listing that your room will not have an air conditioner and that you will have to pay an additional fee for a room with an air conditioner. When you see pictures of a room and there is clearly an air conditioner shown, the assumption is that the room will have an air conditioner. BEWARE, no air conditioner and NO screens to leave the doors open at night. Read ALL of the fine print. And even when you read the fine print when you get to the hotel it is a different story. Upon arrival at the hotel we were told that we were required to pay cash for the entire stay. This is not listed in any part of the reservation. It clearly shows in the reservation that the amount of 50% of the reservation was charged and the other 50% would be due via a bank transfer. This is not the case though. The extremely RUDE owner of this hotel will demand that you pay him in cash. There is NO other way to pay. He claims that he would have to pay too much in tax if he took the money via bank transfer. This has never happened to me before at any hotel in the Dominican Republic. If you say ONE word to the owner, he will huff and puff and follow you around and make your stay miserable. Our bathroom was terrible with sink clogged and broken toilet seat. Slippery floor as water splashes out of the shower everywhere. When I let the owner know that there was no hot water, the man went around and knocked on everyone’s doors and asked them to run the water to see if it was hot. What I was told was that I should let the water run for five minutes and then it will get hot. Whatt?? Ridiculous! We did not want breakfast but ordered coffee. In the middle of drinking our coffee the owner stepped up to the counter and pounded on the counter and in front of everyone said “make sure you know that coffee is a dollar but coffee with milk is $1.50! I was appalled. Don’t stay here! You don’t feel safe with the owner who is clearly a little “off”. There are tons of mosquitoes and no way to get air with no screens. The bathroom doors in the rooms made such loud noise all day and night and were quite bothersome. So many nicer places to stay with owners who will come and offer you fresh fruits from their property and even invite you for FREE coffee. Unless you are French or speak/understand French and can understand what the owner says when he storms around yelling and screaming, DON’T STAY HERE!

Defnitely a home away from home

This beautiful property has several "casitas" of different sizes and configurations. We stayed in two during our stay of five nights (moved into one with a kitchen after another family left). There is also a central lounge where you can relax, have a drink or breakfast, and use the wifi. It is located approximately 1.5 km from the centre of Las Galeras, but I felt this to be a positive attribute, because as we walked around the area, I noticed that most of the places to stay that were more central also have to contend with significant noise, including loud music from the bars. If you don't have a car, from Las Mariposas you can arrange a motorcycle taxi or a car taxi to get to the centre or the beaches and there are a couple of shops within easy walking distance where you can get essentials if you are cooking for yourself (or buy beer). We also did the walk to town, including to La Playita, a few times and it isn't really that bad. Las Mariposas itself was tranquil, spotlessly clean and welcoming - the owners and staff are very friendly and helpful and during our time there we did really feel like family! I hope to return here at some point and would definitely recommend it to independent travellers looking for a place to stay near Las Galeras. Also, it would appeal particularly to those with a social/environmental conscience as the owners have been working in the community doing development projects for two decades.
