Room with Aso-san view

Reviewed By Evelyne E

Hotel located 1000 - 1200 m from Aso-eki (no shuttle), I enjoyed my western-style room with the view on the volcano. However, the room needs to be refreshed and have better curtains. The onsen is average in quality. The food buffet is large and you can find all you want for dinner but breakfast has less choice.

Kanpo no Yado Aso

nice hotel, good onsen, good food

Reviewed By janneman55

instead of staying at Aso, we decided to go to Miyaji, and stay at the Kanpo no Yado, where we had a room (6th floor) with spectacular view on mount Aso. The hotel is comfortable (tatami-rooms), and you can enjoy the onsen until 23h, so no need to rush. If you want to admire mount Aso from the outdoor pool, you should go for a bath in the morning. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast too, but hotel staff don't speak English. However, a mixture of very simple Japanese and (mainly) gestures will do. Make sure you have enough money, the system doesn't always recognise foreign credit cards (my Mastercard didn't work). They have a shuttle service, taking you from and to the station in 5 minutes, and it's another 10 minutes to Aso Station (where you take the bus to go to Aso mountain)

unique experience

Well we certainly had a unique experience at this fine Ryokan. Our room was very nice with comfortable double bed (western style) but with a tub / shower outdoors on our private porch. Tub supplied by local hot water (but no too hot). We were prepared delicious and gracious vegetarian meals. (Eating Japanese style). Very welcoming staff and with decent English. Free WIFI in bar. Free parking. Very special.

Welcome to Sozankyo. This Modern Ryokan was built almost 60 years ago. Sozankyo consists of 3 wooden buildings, and each of the 38 Japanese-style rooms has its own private toilet. Sozankyo has natural hot spring water for the guest's relaxation and enjoyment (the baths are same gender only). Delicious, seasonal meals are served throughout the year and the owners of Sozankyo are particularly proud of their tofu dishes. Check-in time is after 15:00 and check-out time is before 10:00 am. Parking is available.

Fantastic value for a great ryokan experience

Gorgeous rooms overlooking greenery. Historic decor but modern comfort and cleanliness levels. Don’t let the fact that it is in the town turn you away; it is in its own complex with lovely gardens and bird song all day long. Food is terrific: good, local ingredients and haute cuisine presentation. The famous akaushi beef is first rate and you cook it yourself Yaki-niku style on a piece of volcanic rock. Plenty of professional staff, a rooftop bar/lounge, amazing onsen water...you get the picture. Highly recommended; terrific value! You’ll pay much much more at other places and won’t have this level of experience.

Great facilities and oishii food

Reviewed By Michal B

We stayed in this hotel 6 nights. Our room was in 5th floor and we had super view of sleeping Buddha (Aso Volcanoes). We appreciate that room was much bigger than we are used to see in Japan! So it was very comfortable! There was everything what you need - fridge, fan, air conditioning, safe, humidifier, tv, sofa, and more. Everything was clean! You can use your own bathroom or go to the onsen which is in the hotel! The onsen is traditional and have indoor and outdoor areas! We like jpns Yukata :D sou you can wear it instead of your clothes! The staff was very helpful, kind and professional! But what was the best - was food! It was indescribably amazing! Awesome! So oishii! Everything what we ate was delicate! And very nice to look at! We enjoyed dinner and breakfast time so much! In front of the hotel is special foot onsen what is very nice when the weather is beautiful and sun is shining outside and what's more, you can drink this water cause it is healthy! So we hope to come again!

Best hot spring Ryokan

Reviewed By mkwli

We tried 3 Ryokans with private Onsens on our recent trip to Kyushu, including one in Yufuin that is twice the price of Shinwaen. Overall, we enjoyed Shinwaen the most, and thought it provided good value. Dinner and breakfast were included in the price. The food, although less in quantity to the Yufuin one, more than made up for it in quality, with a lot of attention to details. We booked 2 rooms with private onsen outdoors, and both were nice and comfortable. Staff were very friendly. We drove a rental car and Google maps was able to find it with no difficulties. It is not far from Aso volcano. The only negative is that the Ryokan is next to a hospital, but once you are inside the Ryokan, you will not have sight of the hospital at all.
