Stanley's Fish and Chips

Reviewed By RosscoInOshawa

I usually don't review a restaurant after the first visit but sometimes it is unavoidable. This one we did wait until the second time to visit before I did the review. Personally I find it difficult to find decent fish and chips even at the best of times in this area. From another review I/we have done previously we found the fish and chips in the restaurant in Courtice at Townline and Highway 2 to be our favourite, that is until now.In all fairness if the Courtice restaurant served ANYTHING for a dessert it would remain our fav but the restaurant, Stanley's (East) Fish and Chips in Brooklin has proven to be superior on the dessert merit alone. They have one of the best Rice Puddings I have ever had... and I was never very fond of rice pudding before. Another winner is having a supply of tartar sauce and seafood sauce on the table so you can squirt large or squirt small, whatever your desire. You don't have to beg for another tiny half filled container when you want more - it's right there! My wife and both have been asking for light batter as we are both watching our figures. Sometimes it is hard to tell whats light or whats heavy but there is a difference here from what my wife can tell. This second visit we splurged and ended up spending $50.00 plus tip for two full and filling dinners and dessert. Finally we have two options if we want Fish and Chips locally but until Stanley's stop serving their delicious and wonderfully embellished desserts, this one will be our preference.I am so pleased you did save room for the rice pudding. I was your server, and really nice if serving staff was able to review customers, you were both amazing to deal with, I wish all my customers would banter and laugh. I truly enjoyed my experience with you and we aren't going anywhere.....

There are some good points, and a few negatives: We went in a group of 5. We had reservations which were easy to make online. Building on the outside is gorgeous and we have been Brock St. Beer fans for a long time. We were excited to finally get there! Immediately upon entering, we see the sign about the 2 hour table time. To me, this is off-putting.....there are many restaurants that are busier than 12welve Bistro that don’t hit you on the face with that policy upon entering (even if they have that policy, they are skilled in turning over tables seamlessly without customers feeling it) strictly my opinion, other guests may have no issue with the transparency, it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Our server was nice, efficient and knowledgeable, so no issue with service at all. Lots of seasonal drinks on menu. Good beer selection, and interesting menu. Food was prompt. 2 of us got the Schnitzel on a bun. When the plates arrived they were hot....and my friend was handed the plate and nearly dropped it as he was surprised by the heat. The bun was a skinny crusty baguette. The size of the schnitzel was too large to eat as a sandwich, so we both decided to try it as open faced sandwich. Eventually both of us ditched the bun, and just ate the schnitzel, as the bun was impossible to cut. Flavour was good on schnitzel though. Lastly, the ketchup for the fries was scarce for the amount of fries they give you - comes on the side in a little dish, but was approx. a table spoonful. Others had chicken fingers, Mac and Cheese, and chicken pot pie. Everyone felt the food quality and serving sizes to be very good. The biggest issue we had was noise level. It was busy (Wednesday) and the windows were open, but it was not street noise that we heard, as we were at the back. It was less about the volume and more about the acoustics if that makes sense?? It was impossible to talk....not sure if it’s because of the high ceilings, or what....but literally impossible to hear one another at your table, or to hear the server for that matter. We always go to pubs, and expect busy places to be loud. Not sure what can be done about it, just be forewarned...if you’re trying to catch up with friends, hard place to have a discussion. Happiness Thanks for taking the time to share your visit. I will first address the sign, unfortunately we have had to make this a “possible” policy at times and we unfortunately have had to act upon it. As you mention, you had a reservation. If you had shown up and your table was not ready I am sure that would have left an even bigger bad taste in your mouth. We have this policy as respect to customers making reservations as you did. It is by no means our intent to limit everyone to this policy. There have been many nights when this game have run smoothly and we didn’t enforce. The sign does say “we reserve the right to limit table times to 2hrs” not that we are going to. Hope this explains it a little better. Very happy to hear everyone was happy with their food. The schnitzel is big as most of our food is and many people do eat open faced as you did. Further happy to hear others were happy with their meals too. Now the noise, this is something we are working on solutions for as it can be loud at times as you have pointed out. You are correct when you say it’s busy, it’s been very busy and we couldn’t be happier that people are enjoying what we have created thus far. Thanks again for sharing tour experience, feedback like yours is very important to the success of our business. Hope to see you again soonBest,

Ordered the Halibut with half fries and half coleslaw. Very nice customer service and accomendating when ordering. The halibut was thick, tasted great but found the batter to go soggy quite quickly. Loved the homemade tarter sauce and the extra provided when requested. Not much of a french fry person. Prefer my fries without the peel left on. The coleslaw was good but I have had better.Found the meal a little pricey. My favourite is still Duckworths in Orilla , Olde Tyme Fish & Chips in Bowmanville and Just for the Halibut in Bobcaygeon.
