Where to Eat in Salzgitter: The Best Restaurants and Bars

July 28, 2017 Toi Mattera

Salzgitter (German pronunciation: [zalt͡sˈɡɪtɐ] ( listen)) is an independent city in southeast Lower Saxony, Germany, located between Hildesheim and Braunschweig. Together with Wolfsburg and Braunschweig, Salzgitter is one of the seven Oberzentren of Lower Saxony (roughly equivalent to a metropolitan area). With 101,079 inhabitants and 223.92 square kilometres (86.46 sq mi) (as of 31 December 2015), its area is the largest in Lower Saxony and one of the largest in Germany. Salzgitter originated as a conglomeration of several small towns and villages, and is today made up of 31 boroughs, which are relatively compact conurbations with wide stretches of open country between them. The main shopping street of the young city is in the borough of Lebenstedt, and the central business district is in the borough of Salzgitter-Bad. The city is connected to the Mittellandkanal and the Elbe Lateral Canal by a distributary. The nearest metropolises are Braunschweig, about 23 kilometres (14 miles) to the northeast, and Hanover, about 51 km (32 miles) to the northwest. The population of the City of Salzgitter has exceeded 100,000 inhabitants since its foundation in 1942 (which made it a city (Großstadt) in contrast to a town (Stadt) by the German definition), when it was still called Watenstedt-Salzgitter. Beside Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Eisenhüttenstadt, Salzgitter is therefore one of the few cities in Germany founded during the 20th century.

N52°11.674' E10°28.043' Always dangerous to go for a non-local restaurant and very dangerous if you know that cuisine very well. However, the Salzgitter area did not offer much choice. Hopes rose when an Italian waiter attended our table and the number of choices on the men looked impressive.
The entrees made clear that da Claudia is a pizzeria and not an Italian restaurant. Fine Italian cooking was not present in the dishes. Nothing fresh, delicate and tasteful like in Italy. More what Americans do with Italian food: deliver large greasy portions that fill the stomach with lots of calories. Not an Italian dining experience. Limit yourself to pizza.

Alles in allem gut.

One thing you can be sure of here - you will get a friendly welcome! The service here is top and more than makes up for the rather plain decor.
The menu is long and over the years I've tried most of it. There's really nothing to complain about. Personally I like the baked dishes best, but the pizzas are fine and the pasta dishes are completely in order.
The prices are quite cheap, but the quality didn't suffer for it - all in all, well worth a visit!

There ate a few Greek restaurants in town, but this one is easily the best. There is a long menu with something for everyone. Meat is the core business here, but the fish is always well prepared. Ice been going there for years and can't remember ever having a bad meal.
It's a family-run restaurant and the service is friendly and attentive. The prices are more than acceptable and the portions are large.
The Artemis Platter (for two people) is a highlight, but an honorable mention should go the the Meses Platter, and the Garides.

Der gesamte Teller mit Beilagen, Salat und weiteren gegrillten Beilagen (z.B. Tomaten, Peperroni) - echt überzeugend. Ich kann das nur weiter empfehlen. Nette Menschen im Service und Küche zudem.

Ristorante Gallo Nero

Say you find yourself in Salzgitter-Bad...not exactly the center of the universe...and want a great place to eat dinner. Well, search no further than this absolute culinary kiss of a restaurant. Conveniently located on a main street, we walked easily from our hotel based on a recommendation, and did so three evenings in a row -- very unusual for us, but we were that impressed. How such a super Italian chef ends up in a sleepy little German town like this never ceases to amaze us. (Actually, Salzgitter-Bad is a convenient, accessible and more intelligently-priced base for easy car travel to Hildesheim, Goslar or Braunschweig, so it's not as off-the-beaten path as it feels.)
The restaurant caters to large groups for special occasions as well as casual diners. You can get there when they open at 5 PM and take your chances as we did the first evening, but I'd still suggest making a reservation since it seems to be by far the most popular place in town with the locals. You can ask to sit in the sizable outside dining area under large, dark green umbrellas, or you can venture inside where the décor is tidy, but unexceptional. This place is about the food. So since it was summer and hot, we ate outside to catch the breeze aside customers in both jeans and nice party clothes.
This is not your corner pizza joint. Upscale food is available, but nothing is overdone or pretentious, including the prices which were quite reasonable for the quantity and quality of delicious food we were served. Our bill never totaled more than 47 Euros, including all the food, wine and liquor we enjoyed.
Now, about the food: I seldom eat steak in Germany because it's a huge disappointment compared to midwestern American beef, but ordered the Bistecca ai Funghi (twice) and was absolutely floored. A thick, juicy, rare steak arrived, with a nice crust, but tender enough to cut with a butter knife, smothered with flavorful mushrooms tinged with fresh rosemary and thyme, along with roasted potatoes and the best bacon-wrapped green beans I'd ever put into my mouth. The delicate sauce, laced with oils, fresh herbs and sun-dried tomatoes, pulled the flavors of the dish together.
Prior to that, we'd been served a complimentary appetizer as well as a basket filled with hot, freshly baked bread and a homemade spread (garlic, fresh herbs and ??) and our wine. Be careful not to fill up on this!! Along with our entrée came a colorful salad filled with little "goodies." Presentation was professional and perfect.
The menu is quite extensive, so there is surely something there to please everyone in your party. My husband raved about all three of his meals: the first was a melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi special filled with steinpilzen, topped with little sheets made of truffles and a special cream sauce, etc. The second was a plentiful plate of pasta with scampi, and the third was a crusty seafood pizza. Everything was prepared to order and tasted like it came fresh from the garden, sea or butcher. By the way, if you like Sambuca as your after-Italian-dinner drink, this is the place to order it. My husband was served a second one "on the house" each evening. I preferred to snarf an ice cream dessert, a significant weakness of mine.
Service was attentive and speedy by German standards, even though the restaurant was very busy. The servers (probably family) were friendly, speaking some English when my limited German and Italian vocabulary failed me.
When we're within 50 km of this area again, we'll be sure to make a detour to patronize this excellent restaurant. We'd suggest you consider it, too. Buon divertimento!
