As perplexing as this restaurant was personally recommended by our B&B, as how can any restaurant be so uncaring? Upon entering a completely empty dining room, we apparently interrupted the seated cook and staff watching evening Portuguese soap-operas. Instead of a warm greeting, we were barely acknowledged. That should have been a warning sign - but we had been on the road for so long so didn't take time to review options. Regrettably, we settled...
We ordered two dishes: grilled chicken "Portuguese style"; and "barbecue" pork ribs. Again, we weren't fast enough in waving off the obligatory served bread, olives & slice cured ham - all of which you're charged for, no matter how little or much is consumed (or even wanted) and just that came to $5.50 Euro. Both main dishes were "basic" - but the pork was tough and burnt from over-cooking with mostly fat and no meat as well as heavily salted. The chicken wasn't anything special (half small chicken) but it was at least reasonably eatable.
All-in-all, the entire staff and their service seem obligatory - as we're open, so we need to serve...
Again, lesson learned - hotel or B&B dining recommendations don't translate into an excellent restaurant dining experiences. Whenever possible, do your TripAdvisor research first for what fits best...

Located in Casteleiro, very close to the Serra da Estrela and next to one of the most beautiful historical villages of Portugal, Sortelha, the Casa da Esquila is a privileged space for Food, Wine, and other sins...Based on the concept Rural Gourmet, the offer of the Casa da Esquila is enhanced by the fantastic natural resources that the region has, which combined with the rich culture and culinary tradition, complemented by experience professionals make the table of the Esquila, a must, because as someone said, this is probably one of the best table in Serra da Estrela and “Beiras”.Specialities :Meat of outstanding quality, fish with traditional fragrances, vegetables and fruits from organic production, regional sausages, cheeses and many other national reference products with an transcendent flavor. All this combined with a season menu based on tree themes.(Farmer, Regional, Gourmet w/ Signature)
Seemingly in a class above anything else surrounding, this humble regional restaurant is more likely something a visitor might experience in large, cosmopolitan city - not in a small village among the modestly magnificent and rugged countryside southeast of Guarda, Portugal. Even the twisty, winding journey through the hilly Berias landscape and then the narrow, high stonewall bordered road in Casteleiro village to the restaurant has one wondering, can it really be that exceptional???
Be assured - one will be amazed! We opted for the more formal dinning room (rather the buffet which we found mostly locals were seeking for lunch) and the accompanying 5+ course epicurean treat (which includes wine) all for 26 euros per person!! Each dish is inventively created by the chef/owner, Rui and his staff using only fresh local, hand-selected produce. From a delightful local twist on cornbread using two grains, to its own brewed balsamic, to drying local goji berries in add a special surprise in the salad - detail in supreme harmony and savored not only in each mouthful, but visually. As each artistic plate is served as its own event. Rui makes a point to personally describe each element.
There is also ample choice in high quality regional Portuguese wines at very reasonable prices. Even if you weren't planning on being in this region, a long repast here is an unforgettable and precious experience...

Another unexpected good surprise.
In the middle of rural Portugal, with just traditional Portuguese places, suddenly my daughter has a craving for Pizza.
I try a random place, not even registered in Trip Advisor, and Voila...
The best pizzas ever in my life...
She had the Ham and Salami, and I had the Quattro Formaggio.
These pizzas were simply divine...

Restaurante situado muito próximo do Sabugal. Grande sala de refeições, com decoração muito simples e cheia de comensais, ocasionando grande ruído ambiente. Menu a preço fixo. Comida relativamente bem confeccionada, sem deslumbrar, Atendimento algo confuso, face à elevada clientela.

Tipical portuguese restaurant. Specialized in grilled food, such as lamb, cod and chops. With a room suitable for weedings and other kind of banquets, capacity for 500 people, Gardens, lakes, playground and a little animal farm with ponys to ride on
