We started visiting this pub 5 years ago, and have to admit the food back then was superb. But visits over the last 2-3 years have been a little below par and Sunday Lunch today was no exception.
First the good points: The pub is cosy as you like, rustic and traditional with excellent staff and a small selection of good beers. There was even a small live jazz band on. Perfect, what more could you ask for, well, better food would be the answer to that.
I had tomato soup to start (I know, fine dining at it's best) which tasted rather insipid. But it didn't taste as bad as the small bread roll that came with it. God knows what dough is being used to make these things but it didn't taste like any bread I'd ever tasted before. Needless to say, it wasn't finished.
On to the roast beef main. The beef was leather-like and chewy, the mustard was almost tasteless so didn't help (luckily I had my trusty Coleman's in my coat pocket), and the roast potatoes were overcooked almost to the point of being burnt. Most unpleasant. We obviously weren't alone in recognising this fact as some other people on other tables had actually decided not to eat them. Surely the chef should have clicked by now that something is wrong if so many roast tatties are presumably regularly making their way back into the kitchen.
Sorry but we won't be returning - which is a shame for us because we love the actual pub itself.

The Lord Nelson

The Lord Nelson is a beautiful pub tucked away in the heart of Oakham. As just one of two towns in Rutland, Oakham itself is packed with character. The Lord Nelson fits in perfectly – dating back to the 1500’s the building has been lovingly restored the KNEAD Pubs way. With charming dining areas throughout the building, you’ll be able to find a cosy spot next to the Aga or enjoy a breath of fresh air in the secluded pub garden. The Lord Nelson is bursting with character, but its relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a bite to eat and a chilled out pint. A centrepiece of the Lord Nelson is the delicious food, fantastic selection of ales and range of wines and other beverages. Here at the Lord Nelson we’re passionate about serving up the perfect pint, along with a mouthwatering meal that combines traditional pub grub with a modern twist. Our well-known, stonebaked (and scrumptious) KNEAD pizzas are always on the menu, plus a great range of lunch or dinnertime dishes. That’s what makes this pub in Oakham the ideal spot for dinner with family, a bit to eat over a meeting or simply a quick drink with friends.

Ok, so I chose to sit downstairs, perhaps going upstairs would have been a wiser idea. A busy Friday evening so lots of tables occupied, all a bit cramped. The menu is fair, not a huge variety and specialising in Pizza, fair enough. You have to order from the bar, not ideal with it being as busy as it is. The groups of people nearby were enjoying a loud pub night out so a bit overbearing, they were pleasant enough but not compatible for a meal out.
I like dogs, I have a dog, but in the dining area I was surprised that there was a Labrador cross eyeing up my dough balls, nice dog, nice people but is this appropriate ?
Had some "nibbles" to start with, huge portions, really almost big enough by themselves, yes, you don't have to eat it all but I don't like wasting things. We didn't get through our mains as a result, nice enough but wouldn't rush back. The staff were all very friendly and attentive.

Really liked the cosy atmosphere of the bar/lounge areas in this pub and the good range of beers served by pleasant staff. We had booked a table for dinner and the one we had was in the small conservatory - which was quite comfortable but a bit chilly and was used as a corridor for people going to/from the toilet which was a bit off putting. The food was fine but I thought a little over priced for the pretty standard pub food that it turned out to be. Service wasn't too bad but it seemed like the staff were struggling a little and I had to go to the bar a few times to ask for things. Overall we did have a great evening - helped along by the excellent beer! Would certainly call again if in the area.

I had lunch: Bavarian wild boar garnished with greenery, Italian bread and fries. It was perfect: clear flavours, good portions but not 'quantity rather quality' and brisk, friendly service. The man next to me had a loud, droning voice. Even that serious distraction did not affect my enjoyment.
It was full (a wet, mid-week December) of locals. I was a visitor, so I took it that their presence confirmed my choice.

The Barn

Delicious and creative cuisine with friendly service in a unique character building

Reviewed By Indomitable27 - Oakham, United Kingdom

The Barn is different, in a good way. As soon as you walk in through the door it is more akin to entering a friends house than a modern restaurant. The Barn hasn't followed the cliches so it doesn't look or feel like one of the many chains. Service is personal, food is excellent. I recommend wholeheartedly.
