Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit.

We are open the hours specified but we advise you to call to check if we are open for public holidays as these can vary according to time of year.
Agree with all the other posters that the blue cod fish and chips were excellent. Fish itself was thick and yummy and tasted very fresh. The chips (fries) were among the best I’ve had - crisp and delicious. Service was great too.

We are a local Italian family owned and operated restaurant in Dunedin with delicious pizza, pasta and desserts, fantastic wine list & BYO. Catering for intimate dining, family occasions, business dinner and for graduation dinners and large groups we have a banquet menu. Beautiful historic building, amazing decor, roaring fire in the colder months and live piano early in the week, when available. We are open 7 evenings a week from 5.30.
It's 6 months since I last visited Dunedin and dined at Etrusco. It was as good as my last visit. Excellent service, great food, and although it was almost full, it was surprisingly quiet. That's a bonus. The venue is simply charming and the three of us all enjoyed our meals, the wine and beer. I can vouch for the venison farfalle- lovely rich flavour and what a pleasure to have Italian wines to match., Many thanks.

Came here for dinner recently and after Reading the reviews on TripAdvisor was really excited to try some nice seafood. Although the food was nice it wasn't amazing so was a bit disappointed. I had seafood chowder which I always love. The seafood chowder had a curry flavour to it which was quite different to other seafood chowders I'd had. Place is very quirky and different. Not a bad place but didn't meet expectations.

When on holiday in New Zealand I normally visit the Speights Alehouses in Palmerston North, Greymouth and this time in Dunedin. The meals are huge and the menu is designed to suit all diners, I especially look forward to the great selection of Speights beers on tap. It doesn’t matter which Speights Alehouse you dine at in New Zealand you’ll always walk away knowing the meal, beers and service were 10/10.

I was in Dunedin with a colleague earlier this week and had dinner at Two Chef's Bistro. We both chose a lamb dish and it was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and just awesome. The ambience was great and the service was so friendly. Admittedly there weren't many people dining at 6pm but we didn't mind as it meant we were able to eat our meal at leisure and then follow this up with a stroll around the streets of Dunedin. We had intended to treat ourselves to a dessert but alas, we were more than satisfied with our main. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would also return for another meal.

Stumbled upon this delightful cafe for breakfast. Warm & welcoming. Great ambience & interesting adornments. Genuine helpful staff. Perfect breakfast. Most impressed by the care in cooking & presentation. All home cooked cakes & pastries looked amazing. Congratulations to Perc people ?

Great little spot for brunch, the cabinet food is always fresh and healthy. My only suggestion would possibly to have a few more selections to choose from, there’s sometimes only two or three ‘main’ dishes.
I quite often have their pasta or salmon salad and both are delicious. Probably some of the best coffee in Dunedin is served here as well!

Dunedin's best kept secret eatery!
My husband and I both ordered the rib eye which was absolutely delicious along with roasted beet, broccoli and hand cut chips.
The desserts were delicious too - the plum bomb Alaska and the semifreddo cheesecake with rhubarb. Reasonably pricey, but if you want a really nice dinner with ambience and great service, well worth it.

I have been to this place several times and I always love their lasagna. I’m sure they have other great meals but loving their lasagna. It can be crowded during lunchtime at times but wait is totally worth it. Very close to octagon

Loved this place, great layout with plenty of room around the tables and what seemed like larger tables than most places. Food was excellent with a choice of italaian or french. My steak was cooked to perfection as was all our meals and desserts. Good wine list with a server who new her wines a pleasant change. Would highly reccomend a visit.
