Where to Eat in Ladakh: The Best Restaurants and Bars

February 8, 2018 Flossie Demartino

Bounded by the Karakoram and Himalayan mountains, Ladhak is the largest province in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The landscape of Ladhak, a high altitude desert, is defined by craggy, barren cliffs and plateaus. Ladhak is a favorite among adventure sports enthusiasts, offering unique adventures in trekking, mountaineering and white water rafting. While rafting options are available on both Indus and Zanskar rivers, the Zanskar course is more difficult and exciting. The trekking options range from short, day-long walks to visit monuments or monastic settlements to long, trans-mountain treks involving weeks of walking and camping in the wilderness. Ladhak celebrates a numbers of monastic festivals - annual events of the major monasteries primarily in winters. The month of September, hosts the Ladhak Festival, that gives a peek into the richness, depth and pageantry of Ladakh's centuries-old culture, traditions and folk heritage. One can witness the best samples of the region's performing arts, Archery contests and the Ladhak Polo Cup.

The place from outside looks like a home cooked meal type of place, we went in the place thinking that. The place is nothing like that. It is a typical restaurant that serves north India food. The food had too much of garam masala to our taste and we really did not like it.

The Tibetan Kitchen

The Tibetan Kitchen is a cozy and charming eatery in the bustling town of Leh. Tucked away behind a Tibetan market on Fort Road, it's one of the oldest and best place to eat in Leh. The restaurant has a humble ambience and a lovely sit out open to the sky. In peak season it is extremely crowded and at most times you have to wait to get a table. Speaks volume of the food, if the place has people flocked and waiting for a table you know the food ought to be great. Creating a variety of taste buds we serve Tibetan, Chinese, Thai, Continental and Indian cuisine along with chilled beer. The food is made fresh, we make the dishes from scratch that you have to give us enough time to have your order served and you will be pleasantly delighted. You can also sit out in the open space, order a cup of tea or coffee and some starter, read book in the evening and it can be very relaxing. Usually after the peak lunch hour the place is quiet. Other authentic Tibetan dishes like Gyako are made on request and you have to order a day ahead because it takes time to cook and are prepared in the most authentic way

This restaurant serves Tibetan food apart from other delicacies. We had lunch one day with family and everybody enjoyed the food. We also ordered grilled Trout (bought from Manali as fishing is banned in Leh), and it was very fresh. You can seat outside on a sunny day or warm inside. Staffs are friendly and ensures prompt service.

Chopsticks Noodle Bar

A restaurant with both indoor and outdoor sitting, serving authentic Ladakhi food and the best of Asian cuisine. Vegetables are sourced from our very own organic farm and from local farmers. A communal dining concept with the chance to meet new people and share travel experiences. As the saying goes "There are no strangers, only friends you have not met yet." Conversation abounds at Chopsticks Noodle Bar, where we have chosen to keep it unplugged. We made that choice deliberately. You'll see people sharing tables, enjoying their meal and just talking. We promise a dining experience with less distraction and more interaction. Open for lunch and dinner.
