10 Things to Do in Ladakh That You Shouldn't Miss

March 16, 2018 Roseanne Arnett

Bounded by the Karakoram and Himalayan mountains, Ladhak is the largest province in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The landscape of Ladhak, a high altitude desert, is defined by craggy, barren cliffs and plateaus. Ladhak is a favorite among adventure sports enthusiasts, offering unique adventures in trekking, mountaineering and white water rafting. While rafting options are available on both Indus and Zanskar rivers, the Zanskar course is more difficult and exciting. The trekking options range from short, day-long walks to visit monuments or monastic settlements to long, trans-mountain treks involving weeks of walking and camping in the wilderness. Ladhak celebrates a numbers of monastic festivals - annual events of the major monasteries primarily in winters. The month of September, hosts the Ladhak Festival, that gives a peek into the richness, depth and pageantry of Ladakh's centuries-old culture, traditions and folk heritage. One can witness the best samples of the region's performing arts, Archery contests and the Ladhak Polo Cup.

Nathatop

We were bypassing this place enroute from Jammu to Kashmir. Due to excessive rain, highway was closed and we had to stay in Patnitop for a night.
Our driver suggested us to visit Nathatop as thinking there could be snow. We started for Nathatop, hired shoes and gloves. After going halfway, it was all white outside, snowing like anything. There weren't designated parking but parking park on side of road. Lot of snow to play with. Enough store to get tea and maggi.
Overall best place in Nathatop.

Absolutely loved visiting the three temples, the paintings inside are mindblowing and some are some of the sculptures including the hidden 50 foot Buddha statue that many people miss going through a narrow door on the side of one of the smaller temples. The monastery is crumbling and severely needs repairs but having spent ten weeks around Ladakh, this is one monastery I definitely recommend visiting. Dress appropriately!

The entire landscape of this region is awesome. We drove upto viewpoints to get breath taking views of the Mountains and the valley. The place is also called the "lunar landscape" or 'moonscape' because of the volcanic formations in the region that resemble those on the moon. This place is as interesting as the other places in the heaven called Ladakh, and defintiely, worth the visit.

Tso Moriri Lake

Reviewed By kiranpaulreddy - Gurugram (Gurgaon), India

Drove from Leh. It is a destination best enjoyed when you drive to it yourself. It has a lot treacherous roads and a lot of them with no tarmac. At a few places they are just Tyre marks on barren land. On your way to the lake you will get to see a lot of ancient villages and and some breathtaking views. There was another lake on the way to Tso Moriri Lake which appeared out of no where and was a pleasant surprise. You will end up crossing a few passes which again are worth the trouble. It's damn cold so pack heavily for winters. Contrary to popular belief there are ample places to stay there but camping would be a good idea. We took our car right up to the banks of the river and camped there. I still consider this to be the best so far. The way is pretty isolated so pack enough fluids and food. Enjoy
