Went with two separate groups of friends during May 2014.
Friendly staff, great food, excellent value for money. This restaurant is enjoyed by both locals and tourists all year long.
Yes the menu is limited, but everything is cooked to perfection and all fresh produce.
Do watch out for the house wine, it definitely packs a punch!!
Well worth a visit.

L'alguer

Reviewed By Helmut F - Hendaye, France

Looking for a place for lunch in L'Ametlla I finally decided to try L'Alguer. The menu outside the restaurant looked ok, price a a bit above average, but the location was the prime reason to choose this one. It was a sunny day and this place being located right on the seafront the views were really nice and relaxing. Food was average, service ok, on the neighbour's table they served a paella which looked quite tasty. I had small fried fish as a starter - good - and a pan fried escalope as a main course - average-. Dessert was homemade caramel cream -good again.
Food and interior decoration are traditional, nothing really exciting, but the place is nice and the view is worth a visit.

Visited with my wife, son and daughter. Lovely setting with the sea as a backdrop, there is a road but it's sort of residential so quiet. Very friendly staff who were great, we don't speak Spanish and their English was limited, but a smile and gestures and a great menu got us through. Food was excellent as was the wine. All very reasonably priced, we went for the set menu for lunch which still had plenty of choices. Would definitely visit again without reservation.

Restaurant La Llotja S.l.l.

Reviewed By TheRealityCheck - Province of Barcelona, Spain

In summary: it is a regular restaurant with a delusion of grandeur. They charge prices (20-30 euro for a main dish) some 50% above surrounding establishments and serve a quarter of the food. Food preparation is poor to average. As for the ingredients, the tuna was of excellent quality and the octopus was of poor quality. Service was rude and arrogant and unable to solve a simple issue in a civilized manner.
The long version: the llotja restaurant venue is small, reasonably decorated but nothing aligned with the price and pretension.
On ordering, I discovered that the fish is mainly grilled “a la plancha”, which is a Spanish griddle. The griddle in Spain is widely used and abused. It happens that different dishes taste the same because everything is prepared on the same surface (… in a gourmet restaurant!?).
They also do not have any type gastronomic menu (… in a gourmet restaurant?!)
The service was the most interesting part. In the beginning I simply asked to be careful with the “plancha” grilling and the “courteous” waitress reminded me that I was in some kind of high level restaurant which was close to getting a Michelin star (… really!). Following on, the “courteous” waitress did neither explain any of the dishes, nor ask whether we liked the food, nor changed the plates between two separate courses (… in a gourmet restaurant?!)
At the end there was even an embarrassing accident when paying the bill. After putting the PIN code, the credit card machine showed a blank screen and gave no receipt. Not knowing whether the card was actually charged, I refused to pass the card a second time. The “courteous” waitress claimed that she would call the police (I did not know that one calls the police to solve a technical failure of a credit card machine?!)
We had a dish of the local specialty, the red tuna. The ingredient in itself was fantastic but the cooking just acceptable. It was four tiny pieces (a few grams) of red tuna grilled served with for cubes of an undefined, strangely tasting, yellow jelly as decoration. The layout of the dish appeared to be of a design dish, but it was in essence four small bits grilled tuna for 27,5 Euros!
(Note of caution: in this restaurant food tends to be undercooked. Ask for well done if you do not like rare fish)
The octopus appetizer consisted of three pieces of 5 cm of grilled octopus with alioli. The consistency was too soft, almost gelatinous. Quality was poor. It tasted just of oil and burnt and the burnt taste left a bad after-taste. It was again a design presentation with little food, poor quality for 14 euros!
The drinks were two beers, a glass of wine and a bottle of water priced like champagne. I mean all drinks cost double than the price of any restaurant in this part of Spain.
The final bill was 65 euros for ONE tiny appetizer, ONE tiny main dish of dubious quality and a couple of drinks (and lovely service included!).

El Moli dels Avis

I will always regret not having been able to join El Molí dels Avis tuna banquet this week (112 EUR for a 10-course all-tuna meal, with live music and on premises carving of the fish by a Japanese sushi chef). The food here, and especially the Mediterranean red tuna, is just awesome. I visited on a slow Wednesday night and spent 79 EUR... but what an experience... sashimi... ginger tartare... "mint spaghetti" (tuna strips marinated in olive oil and fresh mint). And to top it up I had to have a half-portion of turbot with chips. Super enjoyable dinner, extremely pleasant conversation with the maître d' (and owner). Maybe the wine selection by the glass is not great, but this is because I happen to be biased against the whites of this part of Catalonia... white grenache variety too unsophisticated and course for my taste. It would have been so great pairing this amazing tuna with a lemony Rias Baixas... just a personal opinion. 99/100. Great place, worth every penny.

La Serra

We chose La Serra because it had a little variety on the menu (seemed like most of the restaurants served only fish or seafood). It is a smallish place in l'ametlla de mar; we were seated at a lovely table made from an old olive oil press. The service was good and we enjoyed the food (entrees ordered included duck confit, angus beef, fish, octopus); had a wonderful cheese plate for an appetizer that was so large we could not finish. We ordered a cava sparkling to start, then had an outstanding priorat. Very reasonable prices (although everything seemed reasonable in Spain) for both food and drink. The only issue was parking; we drove for a quite while to find a space and counted ourselves very lucky to come across a car leaving a spot.

Every year for the past three years we have spent our holiday near L'Ametlla and eaten out a lot. Last week we treated ourselves to dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Cambrils which was lovely but Balco de L'Estany wins hands down. The location is stunning on a headland overlooking the sea and is wonderfully secluded - you feel like you've stumbled upon the region's best kept secret. The food was sublime. We had mussels and the local dish, fideua, both cooked to perfection with minimal fuss. The proprietor was very warm and welcoming too. The highlight of our holiday this year.

Ate here on the last evening of our holiday - a quiet restaurant on the edge of town, heading down to the port. Not a lot of atmosphere at the time we ate as most customers were collecting pizzas to take away but bright, clean and modern inside and good value got money. Pizzas were handmade and well-cooked - the calzone was star of the show!
