It is also known for the gassing of about 15,000 disabled people in Sonnenstein Castle between June 1940 and August 1941, killings which ceased after pressure was exerted on the authorities by the local population. Today, a small plaque at the base of Sonnenstein Castle and the Sonnenstein Memorial remembers the dead.

We enjoyed dinner here twice. There was a good selection of items all very well prepared. Portions were generous. We liked our server very much, she was most professional and looked after us. We asked her to save our bottle of wine which we had not finished for the following night which she was happy to do.There is a hand written English translation of the menu which is helpful for non-German speaking guests

After a lovely bike ride along the banks of the Elbe on a cold but sunny Sunday, we happened across this lovely restaurant. I had a goose leg with red cabbage and dumpling, my friend enjoyed the roast beef with sweet potato fries. The food was excellent. To accompany the meal we each had a glass of Hacker-Pschorr weissbier. It was a very nice beer for lunchtime, maybe the best. Service was good. I will bring my family here next time.

This is one of the oldest beer gardens of Germany, which has existed for centuries. The view of Pirna is beautiful. It's a real âBiergartenâ so you can just sit outside. It is self-service but the staff is friendly. The cappuccino was nice and soft drinks is served in bottles.
