Oesterij

Reviewed By whitevanman2014 - Leeds, United Kingdom

The waterfront at Yerseke is 100% about Oysters and Mussels. Broadly one end deals with the storing, sorting and selling of Oysters and has the Oesterij and many restaurants, the other end is a line of about eight factories which at the time of our visit were going flat out primarily with Mussels. On our visit mid August there was not a lot happening in the Oesterij although we were able to view the exhibits and read up about Oyster and Mussel culture in the Oesterij. We were told that the Dutch Oyster harvest didn't get underway until September whilst the Oysters on sale in the restaurants were being sourced mostly from Ireland. However our visit to Yerseke was very informative and interesting. As a large party on a group holiday from the UK we had prebooked with the Yerseke Tourist Office to visit a working Mussel factory on the waterfront. For a one hour tour for up to 25 people with English speaking guide we were charged E 69. The huge volume of mussels being sorted in this one factory couldn't fail to impress whilst the very knowledgeable guide explained how the factory sourced, purified, sorted and packed the mussels for everything from supermarkets to bulk export. After the mussel factory the guide then took us to the Oesterij and the Oyster pens which although empty he explained how they worked along with a history of the Oyster industry in the area. We found this a great cost effective way of learning all about the Oysters and Mussels coming out of Yerseke and being consumed not only in Holland but in Belgium, Germany and beyond.

With a group of 9 persons from Soos 't Lobbeke from Zevenbergen, we booked a daytrip with Sailforce in Wemeldinge. In the morning we started with cloudy weather, but no rain and in the afternoon blue sky and very good wind (6).
We started the day with coffee and a "bolus". Marco, the captain of the ship, gives the nescessary instructions and of we went. The sailing, because of the excellent condition, went very well. In the harbour of Kats we had our lunch and drinks. Back in Wemeldinge we finished with snacks. Together we had an excellent day, special for the old sailers.
Recommendable!!!!!!!

Watersnoodmuseum

Reviewed By Jolene H - Honolulu, Hawaii

This was a very interesting and realistically informative museum about the tragic flooding which suddenly occurred both here and in England. Everything was gone so quickly but from this tragic event came a ingenious invention called The Delta Works so that this would not happen again. The layout of the museum has a great flow and their gift shop is not to be missed. A must visit when in Zeeland.

The Kwadendamse mini jungle of Berkenhof's Tropical Zoo is an attraction, where you can see a green iguana rustling through the green treetops, dwarf caimans spying on you and a snake squirming around your neck or a tarantula crawling on your hand
during the demonstration of the caretakers.
There are also exotic tropical butterflies, colorful chameleons, stick insects, frogs and toucans in the most spectacular colors.
You can even go underground in the Fossil mine to discover mammoths and dinosaurs or a lion or rhino of close quarters.
Who still has enough energy, can still equally climb and scramble in Berkenhof's Kids Jungle.
