November 29, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye [ˈtyɾcije]), officially the Republic of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Cumhuriyeti [ˈtyɾcije d͡ʒumˈhuɾijeti] ( listen)), is a transcontinental country in Eurasia, mainly in Anatolia in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries with Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, the Azerbaijan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the south. The country is encircled by seas on three sides with the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, which together form the Turkish Straits, divide Thrace and Anatolia and separate Europe and Asia. Ankara is the capital while Istanbul is the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre, classified as a leading global city.

This tour to the village of Etrim took us back in time hundreds of years. We met Engin (sorry if I’ve spelt it incorrectly), his grandmother, father, mother, sister and her family. We were welcomed into the small, rustic and very rudimentary Turkish house where his grandmother lived when she married Engin’s late grandfather. The people of this village are self sufficient. They keep cows to milk, sheep, goats and chickens, and the women weave carpets. We saw how they produced exotic colours for the wool from the products they grew in their gardens. We watched in awe as they spun the wool then weaved it. Then over a glass of Turkish wine or local coffee, we were stunned by the beauty of the completed rugs. Engin related the stories of each rug - the particular designs and colour schemes, and the deep love and respect he and his family have for them. We could not leave the village without one of these works of art. We will cherish it forever in our home in Australia. What more can I say? It was a wonderful day with intimate access into the magical world of traditional Turkish carpet making.

I was so much afraid of any faux-pas concerning rugs purchasing: What are the fair prices to be negotiated? What is the richness of the line-up available? How can you be sure of the quality of the pieces presented? What is the value of the certificates? At Yörük in Avanos, a long-time supplier to diplomatic missions and expatriates in Turkey, you enjoy Ertan and Ali-Fuat's experience who won't put any pressure but actually spread over their passion. They always take pleasure in detailing the levels of quality, the varieties, the origins, the natural dyes, and the complexity of the weaving or assembly techniques. Whether you come away from the gallery with an extra set of dreams, knowledge or rugs in hands, a visit to Yörük will always be a top highlight of your stay in Cappadocia!

Hakan Evin (Imperio Otomano): The very best place to buy beautiful handmade carpets in Istanbul. Highly recommend. Hakan is a very reputable carpet dealer, someone you can trust 100%. He is very knowledgable, professional and trustworthy. He will NEVER sell you an acrylic rug making you believe is pure silk! His carpets are all over the world. He has carpets for every budget because his philosophy is: buy a carpet that makes you happy, because carpets last a lifetime! We purchased several carpets from Hakan when we were stationed in Istanbul. Love them all.
