The Mills

The Mills is a landmark revitalization project by Nan Fung Group, a celebration of shared industrial legacy with Hong Kong, and a step towards a future of applied creativity and innovation. The Mills is built on a foundation of legacy and heritage. Visitors can explore the continuity of an authentic Hong Kong story, where themes of textile and industry are woven into experiences of innovation, culture, and learning.

The Mills is a neat place to visit in Tsuen Wan for shoppers, diners and those with an interest in history and heritage preservation. This is the location of old Nam Fung Textiles, a prosperous cotton mill during Hong Kong's manufacturing heydays of the 20th-century. Instead of tearing down these old mill buildings and rebuilding something new and different, the Nam Fung Group decided to revitalise and repurpose them into a modern shopping, tech centric, art, cultural and heritage venue - similar to recent PMQ and Tai Kwun projects on Hong Kong Island. This landmark revitalisation project was completed in 2018. Now you can walk the floors and enjoy sleek, modern and urban industrial feel of The Mills. You'll see old warehouse pillars still supporting numerous floors but where old office spaces and factory line equipment might have been in the past, you'll now encounter boutique clothing, lifestyle and accessories shops, cooking class setups, restaurants as well as a small textiles museum. Throughout The Mill's you will also see history panels with old pictures of the the Nam Fung Textiles. These are worth stopping to read and view for a couple minutes to help provide context for the modern day Mills, including undertakings which went into repurposing the buildings as well as restoration efforts to preserving certain important aspects of the old Cotton Mills that once filled this space. What we also very much enjoyed about The Mills was the large open rooftop area and garden. Visiting at nighttime, this was a surprisingly beautiful, nicely lit place. It includes tables and seating for the public as well as art and sculpture installations, highlighted by a large scale work called the Wavy Weaving Wall, a visual representation of HK's textile-industrial history. This is worth a few minutes to enjoy. Overall, we were really pleased with The Mills during our recent visit and look forward to passing by again to spend more time here in the future. It is a respectable venue that is well worth making time to visit in Tsuen Wan.
