It is about 1.8km to the shrine and you can see hundreds of stone steps and cedar trees on the way. It is said the trees were planted by Betto in 1648 and took 13 years to complete.

Adorable and charming onsen place; a must go if u are in yamagata area. Try to go early in the day and enjoy a stroll in the town and onsen at night. Amazing view when it's covered in snow during winter. We booked a taxi for half a day to take us around to Mogami river and then to train station - highly recommend taking this route. We do not speak japanese but we can communicate easily with google translate. Save us the hassle of managing the luggage and waiting for public transport under heavy snow. Highly recommend esp if you are travelling with elderly and kids.

The sakura bloom everywhere. You can walk up the mountain - a steep path or stairs will get you to the top - and down again. Take one path up, another down. On your way up there are lovely sights - interesting trees, benches and tables for resting, small waterfalls, and always the sakura. Lovely views from the top. Be sure to walk the ramparts as well. When you get back down to the bottom level, food stalls provide welcome sustenance during sakura season.

This historic neighborhood consists of wide, tree-lined streets with mansions built during the Edo Period, only six of which remain and are open to the public. The area is particularly beautiful in late April, when the cherry trees are in full bloom.
There are a minimum six houses to visit (of which two are admission), others to be viewed from the exterior free since they are city maintained

This historic site was accidentally discovered during construction of a baseball stadium. Excavations have revealed artifacts and structures dating back 5500 years to the Jomon period.
Teepees and everything else you can live in in ancient times is covered in a fantastic walk about... people there are so friendly and helpful.

If you drive to Ouchijuku from above on the mountain road, you will first come to a restaurant that's just before the village. The restaurant has a large, gravel parking area. The car in front of us pulled into it and so we followed as we didn't know where the village parking was. Turns out, there's a secret path from here to the top of the Ouchijuku village that's shorter than walking from the official parking lots. The path starts next to the restaurant and is an improved walkway, with steps down and a bridge across the creek to a road that goes to the village. After visiting the village we had a zaru soba snack at the restaurant and their homemade soba was better than what we had in the village.
