Toba Aquarium

Reviewed By Higuma2017 - Vechta, Germany

This is an old aquarium, renewed several times, with some excellent display and some others with debatable space for the animals. Still this is my favourite aquarium in Japan, out of dozens of others one sees around the country. An AMAZING collection of sea and river creatures, and some that you will probably not find together anywhere else, such as West African Manatees, Dugongs, Finless Porpoises, Steller Sea Lions, Baikal Seals, Commersons Dolphins, Sturgeons, Sea Angels, Giant Isopods, and so much more... This is gold, and even though it does not have the whale sharks of Osaka or Okinawa it is worthwhile the day trip.

Toba Bay

Reviewed By ChadPeterson47 - Seattle, Washington

Toba Bay and outlying Islands are beautiful to visit especially if you take one of the boats from the harbor. There is couple of larger boats that hold a hundred people but I would suggest taking one of smaller boats. It costs about $$30-40 for 90 minutes to 2 hrs per person. There are many different boats with competitive prices. Like anything in Japan, they are all licensed so don't worry. No one really will try to cheat. But you can bargain down so don't take the first bait. It's worth the boat trip.

Mikimoto Pearl Island

Reviewed By JapanCustomTours - Japan

The displays about the cultured pearl process are interesting and provide some back-ground to the development of the pearl industry which is important for those interested in pearls (because this is where it started). Also being able to see the Alma divers is something interesting, but it is a staged show and makes the expensive entry fee a bit more worthwhile.
But, Mikimoto is in the business of selling their product and the on-site store certainly has a lot of product (and on-hand staff) to help you buy something.

Toba Sea Folk Museum

The Toba Sea-Folk Museum was founded in 1971 to preserve the knowledge and history of Toba's fishing traditions and culture. We are the only museum in Japan dedicated to understanding the traditions of Toba's fisher-folk and the relationship between man and the sea. For over 40 years the museum has collected and preserved the antique fishing equipment of Mie Prefecture's fishing villages, and researched the traditions and religion of the area's fisher-folk.In 1985 the museum was presented with an award by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs('important Tangible Cultural Properties') for our collection of 6,879 exhibits about Toba's ancient fishing traditions and antique fishing equipment.

This beautiful museum stretches across a hillside on a cove in 6 buildings. The buildings each feature a different exhibition with lots of material that is easy for English speakers to figure out. We especially enjoyed sitting in on the Nori making class. We also found the video on the Ama divers really wonderful. The staff spoke some English and many of the exhibits featured video or visuals that were self explanatory. The museum is a simple walk through the forest on the Thalassa Shima hotel Promenade. We are so happy that we decided to look in and see this beautiful museum. The name in english is a little corny and we were thinking mermaids etc.

Chidorigahama Beach

Reviewed By Southofcase

We had a great time. The beach has soft sand and very flat. The water was a great temperature for spending a lot of time. There was barely a current and for the majority of the 6 hours we were there the swells were under a foot. Not a beach to go to if you are looking to surf but a great beach to go to with kids. It was crowded but fewer people than we were expecting.

This festival is held every year on the 4th Friday in July around the port of Toba in Toba City, Mie Prefecture, famous as the gateway to the sea of Ise-Shima. The festival is also the annual grand festival of the Toba branch-shrine of Kotohira-gu Shrine, and includes such Shinto rituals as a temporary-palace festival and a waterborne procession with a portable shrine. Approximately 100 open-air stalls are set up around the site of the festival, and the festival includes all sorts of highly attended events such as a Japanese drum performance as well as dances by the local people. The festival reaches its greatest intensity in the evening with a fireworks display: roughly 4,000 brightly colored fireworks paint the sky and sea of Toba Bay, a magnificent spectacle referred to as "the night that the sea burns."
