What to do and see in Tenby, Wales: The Best Sights & Landmarks

May 21, 2022 Kandra Bartel

Tenby is lovingly protected from the outside world by an embrace of 13th-century stone walls, which, ironically, attract—not repel—visitors from all over the world. The town is simply adorable, teeming with the archetypes of pubs and shops one would expect to find in a U.K. city. Adding further appeal are the miles of gorgeous beaches and the gently lapping waves of a blue-grey sea.

Tudor Merchant's House

We visit Tenby often and had never, despite knowing about the house, had actually visited. We were caught out for activities on a rainy day and decided to stop in. With reasonable entrance fee it was a delightful and interesting little pass time, my girls despite being older quite enjoyed reading the little informative facts around the house, dressing up and completing a sweet little doll hunt set out around the house. The building is small and doesn’t require to long to fully explore and enjoy all three floors. with very friendly staff I do recommend a visit if your in the area.

Carew Cheriton Control Tower

Discover the aviation and wartime history of south Pembrokeshire, take a trip back to the 1940s and experience the restored Control Tower building as it would have been during the war years. Don a helmet, take cover and sing wartime songs in our reconstructed Stanton Air Raid Shelter, now built above ground for easy access by all. Experience our huge array of exhibits of the era in our museum collection including military uniforms, RAF maps, radio equipment, ration books, Bren gun, Enfield rifle and many, many more… Enjoy the personal testimonies and local stories of the wartime in Carew from two of our very active members now in their 80’s – Both were in secondary school in 1939! And now you can come and see our restoration progress in the newly built hanger on our Avro Anson, Thompson Fuel bowser and Fordson tractor.

Having been here before we visited again to take my father in law aged 81. They were closed for winter when we got there but one of the volunteers was there and he opened everything up for us and showed us round. My father in law absolutely loved it and the knowledge and passion of the gentleman showing us around was second to none. They need funding to improve their facilities and I really hope they get it as it's a brilliant historically important site which needs to be treasured.

St. Catherine’s Island

St Catherine's island is home to a Palmerston fort and a WW2 Anti aircraft gun placement. Visitors the island are welcome. For opening times search Saint Catherine's Island on facebook it is the best place due to tides and weather.

This island has recently been re-opened to the public. Viewing hours are tide dependent, and although the fort is in its early stages of renovation, it is well worth a visit. There is a very good tour guide in the fort with a sit down 30 minute presentation on the history of the fort. Reminds me of the needles battery on the Isle of Wight.

Tenby Harbour

Reviewed By grahamc894 - Dunton Green, United Kingdom

This is the typical quintessential tourist resort harbour with small fishing boats and rowing boats but with much more. The area is well - kept, surrounded with pastoral coloured buildings narrow streets and good food and drink outlets. Recommend Simply Seafood for a taste of Tenby and the Cardey / St Margaret Island cruise. Entrance to the Castle and South Beach nearby.

Just a small castle tower on the top of a hill on the edge of Tenby. The place offers beautiful views of the fortress and the surrounding beaches. Worth a visit.
