This ornate Moorish temple is among the most revered religious sites in the region.
The Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Nazare is the main church in Belem, and is the focal point of the Círio de Nazaré – one of the largest religious festivals in the world. The church is in excellent condition and is obviously very well maintained. The exterior of the church is imposing and beautiful. However, the inside of the Basilica is probably the most ugly church interior I have ever seen. Was I really inside the same church that has received all these glowing reviews? In my opinion the interior is an architectural disaster.
The interior is decorated in a mishmash of styles – completely unintegrated. It’s as if the architects randomly pieced together all the different elements with no consideration for the whole. Many of the individual elements are quite frankly ugly. The marble columns looked like the marble used in the kitchenette of a dated 1990s hotel apartment. The wooden panelled roof looked ridiculous. The hanging light fittings looked cheap and out of place. Other decorations also looked cheap or fake. The shape of the interior looked boxy and awkward.
Then there was the numerous big screen TVs throughout the church featuring close ups of the congregation in cathartic prayer. In this church, worshipping felt more about celebrity and performance rather than something sacred. I found it grotesque and perverse.
Just because something is big and highly decorated or just because we are told something is beautiful, doesn’t mean that it is actually beautiful. I had high expectations but was very disappointed.

Great sunset beach, often with dolphins passing in the distance, took some fantastic photos so bring your camera!

We visited the forest in the rain which meant we really didn't get to experience the full extent of the walks available.
There were very few birds in evidence no animals, but the forest was rich in flora and with w guide to explain it all it was a pleasant short excursion from our cruise ship.

The sand strip is small, but the beach is nice, and less overcrowded as some of the other Mosqueiro Beaches. The best thing to do, is settle down inside one of the rustic restaurants overlooking the beach, and order some fish or shrimps, and just relax. This part of Mosqueiro faces the direction of the open bay to the Atlantic, so a breeze is almost always guaranteed, and the water has more personality (choppy when windy, and small waves). It is also cleaner. I loved it!

Family sandy beach which is quiter than the neighbouring Atalaia. A few bars operate on busy days otherwise it is better to take everything with you. Entry to the beach by car can be difficult dependong on the state of repair of the ramps, but there is ample parking close to the beach.

It is a vast beach, the luminosity is bright. We ate fish "muqueca" sitting in one of many "barracas" where you find table and chairs. The breeze never stops. Was a great day on the beach. I always come back for more, each time I travel to Brazil.

Quer ver onças e pumas bem relaxados e andando numa trilha, vai ser esse o local!! As harpias procriam e às vezes tem anta andando no meio do passeio. Local limpo, com excelente infraestrutura

In the late years of the 19th Century, Belém was experiencing the rubber boom and resented from not having an imposing opera house. So, inspired by the famous "Teatro ala Scala", in Milan (Italy), the local Government started, in 1869, the construction of its neoclassical opera house. After some years, the new "Theatro da Paz" opened its doors to the public: Feb 15, 1878! Bravo! The magnificent theater is still there, as beautiful as ever, and offering a busy programme to "belenenses" and visitors. Great guided tours are organized on regular basis and are almost inexpensive. Check the booking office for guided tour tickets. If you are lucky enough, you can even attend one of its many attractions. One last remark: ticket payments only in cash. Enjoy!

The beach is lovely when I was there during the flood season. Sand, clean water, and lots of fun. Living near Cancun it would take a lot to impress me. The only drawback is the local custom of placing the tables and chairs right on the beach, making it impossible to walk along the beach with your toes in the water. You either wade through knee deep water in front of the tables or slog through the soft sand behind them. Good exercise but highly unpleasant.
