What to do and see in Salt Rock, South Africa: The Best Places and Tips

September 22, 2017 Osvaldo Hartline

Salt Rock is a small town just north of Ballito and Shaka's Rock on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a favorite holiday destination for many local South Africans. It is about 40 minutes north of Durban. There are plenty of fishing spots along the coast from Salt Rock, through Shaka's Rock to Ballito and Salmon Bay. Salt Rock owes much of its history to Basil Hulett and his wife Gwen who started not only the Salt Rock Hotel but went on to develop the town of Salt Rock as found today. Nightlife in the small town is limited with a handful of pubs and restaurants offering a variety of food and drinks. A new development, Sheffield Manor, is situated in Salt Rock as well as the newly built Tiffany's Shopping Mall.

Flag Animal Farm

Reviewed By Mr Kavith H - Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Flag animal farm is well-run and provides a full array of attractions for children and adults. The physical layout of the farm encourages exploration. The animals appear to be well taken care of and staff are friendly, plentiful and knowledgeable. Furthermore, the owner has a tangible passion for what she does. The wolves and foxes are a thrill to behold. The coffee shop and general store provides sufficient options. The pony and tractor rides are fairly priced.
Benches, tables and picnic spots are in abundance, as are shaded spots, which come in handy on a hot summer's day.
Well worth the drive to the north coast of KZN!

Thompson's Bay Beach

Reviewed By dewittedirk - Kontich, Belgium

We are wordtravellers travelling the world with our own vehicle. On our way from the north to the South coast we stayed 4 days in Balito. A place full of empty houses and apartments in low season. We loved the place where we camped but Balito itself is boring. We walked to the Thompson bay beach and were amazed to find the black rocks behind private properties. Next to a small parking narrow stone stairs lead to a small beach area where a man made tidal pool is made. At the end of the pool a natural hole in the rock wall leads to another small beach surrounded with grass grown cliffs on the edge of them houses! It is a special place but visiting Balito to see that ..? If a Cafe with a nice teracce would have been there, maybe...

Lovely setting at Burnedale. Superb food with a good Kiddie menu. Large portions and very tasty. Staff are friendly, and as it does get busy, you may need to wait just a little while. Get there early for a table. Normal meal, or tea and cake, sit and relax. Animal farm for the kiddies, sand art, watch out for the goats! Little shops with clothes, home décor or a quick nail bar for Mom! My favourite the Pottery Shop with it's lovely crockery to purchase. Always a good place for a meal.

Very run down, walk way boards loose, pathways over grown water levels very low, glass of snake enclosures very dirty (difficult to see in), mongoose cage very small, rusting metal. After watching the guide with the challenge decided to leave. My 10 year olds comment “at first I was bored, then I was horrified. It seems cruel”

The Litchi Orchard is a functioning litchi farm and a green haven of good food, decor & design. It has become a meeting point for the North Coast community & a unique experience for visitors. Here we celebrate the way food is produced and the people who produce it. A collection of art and food shops situated just behind Sasol on the Salt Rock to Umhlali road. Very interesting and after walking around we each had a scoop of home made ice cream which was delicious. Will go again the next time we are in the area..

Billed as a Provincial mall this very large complex on several levels has it all – lots of parking in the open and under cover – a wide choice of brand name and regular shops, supermarkets and a varied selection of eateries make for an interesting few hours – luckily we had a floor plan with all the retailers, banks, restaurants and other outlets color coded for ease of navigation – without it you could put a kilometer or so on your health monitor! – very handy for locals and visitors alike as it cuts out the 30 minute trip to Umhlanga to find something on a par - there is gallery and also "Court Space which can be sub let by tenants to expand their sales pitch for short periods
