This is a great descent through an unspoilt limestone gorge with only a handful of other visitors, even in high season.
I its an easy drive from the north coast.
We parked at the upper end near the taverna and just did the descent. I'm pretty unfit these days and have a dodgy ankle plus we dawdled early on so took a little under 4 hours to get to the Oasis taverna. The footing is almost all limestone so would be slippy if wet but it was all bone dry for us. The hardest section was the last 1- 2 km which have much less shade than higher up. It was mid afternoon when we got to this part and the heat was extreme; the sun directly above is compounded by reflected heat from the rocks all around you.
The lady at the taverna said the local taxi was off on another job so offerred her middle-aged lady friend as an alternative ride back to our car. This worked well although her cornering was a little more exciting that I had expected.
Forget Samaria - do Imbros and Irini to leave the crowds behind.

One of the most interesting excurtions I have participated in on Crete. The professor who guided us where so enthusiastic and well-informed that he really made my day!! I learned alot more in beautiful surroundings of the Amari valley.

One of the hundreds of gorges on Crete which run down to the Libyan Sea; the most popular, falling 4500 feet over some 12 miles on good paths without hazard. Wear proper hiking shoes and sensible clothing: don't end up sunburnt and hobbling in Roumeli as so many do. Appreciate the Mountains, don't litter, take your time. It's better going up- you've more time to think and savour the isolation.

A simply stunning beach that is very easy to find. Just head out of Paleochora on the Anidri and just outside of Paleochora take the road/track on your right. Just take your time and the road is very easy to negotiate. The beach has two sections the first section pebble which was our favourite part with glorious views and a lovely chilled out cantina serving great food, cold beer, perfect background music and friendly staff. The sunbeds are cheap to hire and the sea fantastic to swim in. You can follow a path and signs to the other section of beach which is called The Sandy Beach and there is also a nice cantina there set amongst some trees. The beach towards the east end is more naturist and this is also where you pick up the E4.
Behind the pebble section the path to the Anidri Gorge begins. Fantastic beach, great swimming, lovely cantina's what more could you ask for :-)

You need to be reasonably fit to get around these Gardens, even if you do the short tour without going down into the base of the ravine. The self-guided tour is, however, very informative and picturesque with many plants growing in a natural environment to provide the disembodied seeds or fruits we are used to seeing prepackaged on supermarket shelves. Plenty of information as you go round and a shady verandah to relax on at the end of your climb back up to the entrance.

During the German invasion of Creete in 1941, the village was completely nivelled as a retaliation of an ambush of German soldiers. The two monuments erected on the the town square with the new orthodox church overlooking it, is really worth a stop. One monument is for remembrance of the civilian losses of 1941 invasion and all other wars, and the second is a replica of a monument the Germans erected themselves. In the village of Floria, 8 km northbound, there are also two different memorials. In the tavern of Floria there is an interesting memo book of the story of 1941 and the ceremonies 50 years later, with Greek and German authorities attending.

Driving from Elafonisi Beach and after a late lunch at Elos, we headed to Anoskeli Winery to visit the olive farm and for wine tasting. Driving across the mountain area was trying and it took longer than we expected. We called in to say we were late, arriving past 5.00pm but the host graciously hosted us to wine tasting lasting about an hour, beyond its closing time. We had an interesting talk about Crete wines and olives. It was a worthwhile visit on our way back to our hotel in Chania old town.

This year, a revolution happened in West Crete, The bland, mass produced lager called Mythos and Alfa got competition from ice cold quality draught beer called Charma in many bars and restaurats. This is where it is made and it is well worthe a visit.
After a tasting and a guided tour, experdly led by the passionate guide Ioanna, I sat down with the owner Yannis to talk about Greek beer, his history and philosophy and his taste in beer. He has designed every screw in this modern, sustainable and functional brewery, located in his beautiful family village above Maleme.
I will come back as soon as I can, to try the special brews that you can only get on site. And hopfully to meet the lovely hosts again.
The only drawback is that you need some sort of transport to get here. I took a taxi and the driver was very happy, because he had nevere been here before.
