Colca Canyon

Reviewed By spospk - Seattle, United States

We did an overnight trip thru Colca Canyon with a guide - it was 22ish km the first day and about 6ish km straight up the next day. This hike is unbelievably gorgeous. We trekked into a small village where they served us local cuisine and then we stayed in a different slightly bigger village where we were served a scrumptious dinner. The basic room had no electricity and we had to walk to a toilet and sink, also with no electrical. The next morning, we had to leave at 4:30am to begin our trek out of the canyon - it was such a cool thing to see all the flashlights and headlamps zigzagging up the trail. Our boys, ages 9-13, did great and think it's one of the coolest backpacking trips we've ever done.

A really nice experience deep into the desert, we were alone. We went with a private car and driver arranged by our Huacachina hotel. A beautiful natural site that will for sure get more popular in the coming years, I think you should go ASAP if you want to enjoy the exploratory feel of the tour!

Canon del Sonche

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The river Sonche runs east to west near the village of Huancas. The slopes on both sides of the river are rocky and steep (unusable for agriculture). Several creeks feed the Sonche and at some points form waterfalls. There is no road at the bottom of the canyon. For all these reasons the view over the canyon is spectacular. Huancas is 8 km (5 miles) from Plaza de Armas in Chachapoyas. The main viewpoint called Mirador del Cañon de Huancas Sonche is 1 km (0.6 mile) from the center of Huancas. Entrance fee 3 Soles. There is a regular (mini)bus service from Chachapoyas (two blocks north from Plaza de Armas) to Huancas. Price 3 Soles one way. I took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to walk from Chachapoyas to Huancas along the dirt road (up 280m), a bit less on the way down.
