What to do and see in Ouarzazate, Souss-Massa-Draa Region: The Best Sights & Landmarks

November 9, 2021 Fernanda Pittenger

The tiny Moroccan town of Ouarzazate is a caramel-colored oasis set against a clear blue African sky. Be inspired by Ait Benhaddou, a beautifully preserved Kasbah that's a UNESCO World Heritage site, or walk in the starry path of celebrities by taking a tour of one of Ouarzazate's two movie studios. Tour the surrounding dunes on camel-back, or simply bask in the quiet bustle of the bargaining sessions at local markets.

Oasis Fint

if only more places lived up to their billing, as flint does, spectacular oasis set into rugged stoney landscape, plenty of bird life along the valley bottom, with the usual shepherds tending their flocks of sheep, goats and camels, walk up through the small fields and gardens, where the locals still tend to the corn, pomegranates, and dates. this is why we love Morocco....................(oh bye the way, we had no hassle and everyone we met was very friendly and welcoming)

Atlas mountains form a range extending over a good part of Morocco, reaching 4000 m and higher. Tizi-n-Tichka is one of the best known passes at the altitude of 2260 m. Before our trip I read about this road and I was a bit scared of the dangers lurking on travellers. The road was presented as a scary, winding path amongst precipices and hanging rocks. Well, it is nothing like that. It is a fairly good road, winding of course, and sometimes it is better not to look around too much, but all in all, it is not so bad and dangerous. The whole passage is very long, I would say about 100 km, but it takes a lot of time, because allmost the entire road is under reconstruction. In a couple of years crossing the Atlas mountains will be a piece of cake. The village at the top does not look like much, but you can buy a nice souvenir. If you like minerals, take some time and admire the vast choice. You can negotiate a good price. Descent towards the town of Ouarzazate is not extremely steep and you only have to be attentive because of road works.

The Old Synagogue

Reviewed By 367markj - New York City, United States

I was there this week with my wife. The experience was fabulous, one of the best things wee have done in Morocco. First - the one bad review here is from someone who visited the sham shop next door that is trying to generate a carpet selling business by saying they are the old synagogue. Its disgusting. Apparently, this person had a bad experience with the carpet sellers, and posted here. It came up in our discussions while there, and I said I would write about this in my review, because the owner and tour guides do not write i English well enough to respond to this problem. This Place - The real deal. Just go. You will be amazed at the things there, and the knowledge of the guides. I loved every minute of my time there. When we finished they offered us mint tea on the roof. It was an unforgettable 2 hours. Bravo !!!!!

Kasbah of Tifoultoute

Reviewed By hamzaslimani96 - Casablanca, Morocco

The kasbah is very exotic place for this part of Morocco and an example of the "mud" local architecture that is built to be cold in the summer and warm in the winter. The ancient spirit of the past is all around! Get close and wonder how the people of that age design and built the Kasbah. A community of people with trade with the outside world. It is also a hotspot for many movies .
