Our day with Adrift was the highlight of the North Island. They were a wonderful group to spend the day with; a delicious lunch was provided and even a very welcomed cold drink waiting in the van at the end! Our guide shared great and interesting stories. Thank you!

Tupapakurua Falls Lookout

Reviewed By Larkeyskip - Snohomish, Washington

This hiking trail is just wonderful, and and inspirational collaboration between the Department of Conservation and the local community. Together, they built a trail in native bush, with signage to help you learn the plants, and an ingeniously simple way to improve the surface. They have established bucket depots where you can pick up a half bucket of gravel and carry it to the next depot. The trail angels are covering the surface in gravel to give traction in wet conditions. The trail is really lovely, deep forest with lots of birds. There is an overlook a ways up, but it was cloudy when I went; I think you can see the volcanoes on a clear day. Then you head for Tupapakurua Falls on a steeper, more gnarly trail that is still beautiful (hiking shoes/boots really necessary). There's a nice Falls overlook, and supposedly you can go down a steeper trail to the base of the falls (it was raining, so I didn't). I saw only one family there, so it was quite peaceful. Watch for the cute little North Island robin: they will hop in front of your feet hoping you'll shuffle and scare up some bugs to eat.

If you are looking for family fun, why not stop in to play mini golf at this great location near the Tongoriro Alpine Crossing in National Park Village, New Zealand?
The course is well designed and built and has a theme. For example, there are several holes that are designed to mimic particular parts of the arduous climb over the Tongoriro Alpine Crossing, like The Devil's Staircase! The course has a number of wonderful flora and plant displays with signage describing each. The course is fair to all, children and adults alike.
