July 19, 2017 Darwin Bolte

Midyat (Kurdish: Midyad‎, Syriac: ܡܕܝܕ Mëḏyaḏ or Miḏyôyo in the local Turoyo dialect, Arabic: مديات‎) is a town in Mardin Province of Turkey. The ancient city is the center of a centuries-old Hurrian/Hurrian town in Southeast-Turkey, widely familiar under its Syriac name Tur Abdin. A cognate of the name Midyat is first encountered in an inscription of the Assyrian king Ashur-nasir-pal II (883-859 B.C.). This royal text depicts how his forces conquered the city and the surrounding villages. In its long history the city of Midyat has been ruled by various different leaders and nations.

Mor Gabriel Monastery

This Syriac Orthodox Monastery is still functioning and in excellent condition. We stayed in Mardin and as there is no public transport to the Monastery we hired a car and driver from Selcuklu Turizm in Mardin at a very reasonable price. It was build in 379 and today the monks still lives there and one is allowed to wander around this amazing stone building and just feel the history surrounds you. It is truly a place where history and spirituality combines.

It was difficult to find the old city when you don't speak the language (common problem when you go it alone ha ha) The architectural style of the old stone buildings are stunning and it really makes you appreciate the sophistication of that period. You can tour inside a few of the buildings. Well worth the effort to find.

Beyazsu

Reviewed By Heather Y - Derby, United Kingdom

Having visited Beyazsu (white waters) many times before we weren't going to go again this time round. however, we decided on fish for tea so had to drive up anyway to buy several kilos (very cheap compared to here in UK). there are lots of different restaurants to choose from. We only had drinks and snacks whilst taking the time to relax and cool off by dipping our feet in the clear water. The area we stopped at (sorry can't remember the name but about half way down) was clean and very reasonably priced (10tl for a 2.5 L bottle of Fanta, 2 large packs of crisps and two ice creams). There were some local teens (18 - 19 in age) playing volleyball and they came over to talk to my son when they heard him speak English and invited him to join in their game, though my son had never played volleyball they were patient whilst he practised. After 10 minutes or so though I thought it best to let them get on with their game alone so my son came with me looking at all the crabs along the rocks. This was a very pleasant stop off.
