Market Drayton is a market town in north Shropshire, England, close to the Welsh and Staffordshire border. It is on the River Tern, between Shrewsbury and Stoke-on-Trent, and was formerly known as "Drayton in Hales" (c. 1868) and earlier simply as "Drayton" (c. 1695). Market Drayton is on the Shropshire Union Canal and on Regional Cycle Route 75. The A53 road by-passes the town. The counties of Staffordshire and Cheshire are both close by.

Very well designed and thoughtful garden, full of surprises at every turn. Beautiful planting, incredible salvias, lovely structures and very well maintained. Lovely welcome at entrance too with friendly greeting, especially with current restrictions. Time slot was sufficient to walk around a couple of times, as not many others there when we visited, lovely autumn colours.

Hodnet Hall Gardens

I believe the gardens are open on Sundays and bank holiday Mondays through to late September. We visited the gardens in glorious weather today, and really enjoyed them. The car park was in a field just a short walk away from the start of a suggested walking route, which was shown on the map given to us at the payment booth on the road in. The route takes you around the hall, then down to a series of ponds which were alive with ducks, moorhens and a couple of swans. The map also offered extended walking routes for those who want to do a little more legwork. There are some stone steps dotted around the 60+ acre site (full of really mature trees, shrubs and flowers) to help you change elevation, though very often there was a grassy slope either side of the steps. When we’d circumnavigated the ponds, we rejoined the main driveway and headed to the walled Kitchen Garden passing an ancient barn and a few young cattle en route. We also got a decent view of the renovated dovecote. We finished-off with a Ploughman’s lunch, some sandwiches and tea at the pleasant tea room before returning to the car. Since there are benches thoughtfully distributed around the gardens, we saw a few people with picnics. We also saw many people walking dogs, though all on a lead. All in all a super couple of hours in a very pretty part of the World.

Dorothy Clive Garden

This 12 acre garden is a very beautiful Plantsman's Paradise. An exceptionally relaxing place packed with plants of interest throughout the year. A winter garden, laburnum tunnel, alpine scree with pool, rose walk, edible woodland, seasonal borders, large Mediterranean glasshouse and rhododendron filled woodland with waterfall are just some of the highlights you will find here. The garden is both intimate and informal with a network of meandering paths that invite you to explore. Relax in the tearoom with adjoining terrace lawn that affords some wonderful views into the surrounding Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire countryside. A picnic area is also available. The Dorothy Clive Garden is a registered charity. The garden is expressly intended to be used for the enjoyment and benefit of the public and to support horticultural education. The garden hosts a range of events throughout the year including children's activities. See website for programme.

Heading north, we decided to visit here after coming off the M6 rather than stopping at the usual services prior to exiting, and we weren’t disappointed! Whilst it was a little early in the year for most of the spring flowers and plants, it was still possible to appreciate the beautiful and well laid out gardens. We visited the cafe and had a quick lunch (as time for us was limited) of soup and savoury scone which was delicious, served but very polite and friendly staff. Afterwards we had a stroll around the gardens before continuing on our journey. Had we had more time, i’m sure we would have spent longer there which would have given us better value for our admission fee, but that was our choice. The gift shop was well stocked with local gifts at reasonable prices when compared to NT gardens and the like. Would love to revisit when there are more flowers out and when we have more time for a better look around.
