September 26, 2017 Stefan Strunk

Lossiemouth (Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Losaidh) is a town in Moray, Scotland. Originally the port belonging to Elgin, it became an important fishing town. Although there has been over a 1,000 years of settlement in the area, the present day town was formed over the past 250 years and consists of four separate communities that eventually merged into one. From 1890 - 1975 it was a police burgh as Lossiemouth and Branderburgh.

Lossiemouth East Beach

Went here on a sunny chilly November afternoon, and walked for miles. What a lovely clean beach. It was vast as the tide was out, there were plenty people enjoying the beach yet you still felt as if you were the only person there. I love the little bridge you have to walk over to get to the beach, that was so cute. I would love to visit on a sunny summer day, and will return.

Glen Moray Distillery

A warm welcome awaits you at Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin. Glen Moray has been distilled on the banks of the River Lossie since 1897 by a small dedicated team of craftsmen. In over a century of distilling at Glen Moray, much has changed. However, the ingredients, processes and the skills of those responsible for producing this finest quality single malt whisky remain constant. A small, friendly and informal distillery, Glen Moray is situated in the city of Elgin, the historic capital of Speyside. The area around Elgin is known as the Laich of Moray and has a mild climate. Indeed, an old Moray saying proclaims that the Laich of Moray has forty days more summer than any other part of Scotland – making Glen Moray one of the sunniest Distilleries in Speyside. The Visitor Centre runs tours of the distillery, tastings of the whiskies available and has a small coffee shop and gift shop.

Great afternoon out with family and nieces. The tour was engaging and interesting and they even involved the children. The tasting session at the end was very worth while and excellent value for money. We will be back with more friends.

Duffus Castle

This castle was built in 1140 AD and is the best-preserved example of a 12th-century moat-and-bailey style structure.

Reviewed By Hankfiji - Hanlontown, Iowa

There is not a lot left of Duffus Castle but we found the visit to be rewarding. Admission is free. There is about a 1/4 mile hike from the carpark to the ruins sitting on a hilltop. The grounds are well kept. Even though there are not a lot of stairs and rooms to crawl around and explore, we really enjoyed our visit. It's a little off the beaten track as we were the only visitors.

A large group from ALK enjoyed organised visits in smaller groups over several days.
The dedication and enthusiasm of the volunteers who run this community project is outstanding. Their open minded approach was demonstrated by their wish to learn anything from our group that we could impart. This allowed for a truly engaging visit and an enjoyable time with a group of people committed to their community.
Would love to go back and stay in the cottage some time. And also to see how they have progressed with various development ideas

Elgin Cathedral

Elgin Cathedral, also known as the ‘Lantern of the North’ is a majestic, historic ruin situated in Elgin. Elgin Cathedral is one of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, dating back to the 13th century. Elgin Cathedral has a rich history - it was badly fire damaged in 1390 following an attack by Robert III's brother Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, who was also known as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’. The two towers of the West Front and the Chapter House are intact and open to the public and the climb is rewarded with magnificent views of the town of Elgin. The top of the tower has an open viewing platform with information boards highlighting the visible landmarks. The ceiling of the chapter house is considered to be one of the country’s finest octagonal structures and those with a keen eye may still see traces of gold paint. Joint ticket with Spynie Palace available: Adult £9 Child £5.40 Concession £7

What can I say about this site!!
One of the best and most interesting Cathedrals in Scotland.
I happened to visit on a lovely sunny day, and was able to take in the beauty of the Cathedral.
They have a really interesting exhibit, with one of the Archbishop's stone coffin. Using sophisticated lights and projections, they show you how the coffin would have looked when it was created several hundred years ago.
Well done to the team that created this particular exhibit!!
If you are able, climb up the stairs to get magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Moray Golf Club

Formed in 1889 and situated on the southern shores of a scenic lake, this course has been regarded as an excellent example of traditional Scottish golf links, where the course provides many spots with magnificent views across the Morey of Firth.

Played on a windy May day and the course was in fantastic condition--the fairways and greens were fast, the rough was playable, the gorse was in full bloom and wasn't playable...the way it should be. We got off to a great start thanks to the club's pro John Murray and his asst. pro Derek. They got us set up and equipped for our round and got us out early. We've played both the Old and New Moray courses and prefer the Old, but would never pass up a chance to play the slightly easier New course. The lovely clubhouse completes a great golf picture.

Pluscarden Abbey is a haven of tranquility and peacefulness rarely found in this world. The monks are very welcoming no matter your denomination or belief or even if you have none. The architecture is amazing when one thinks of the lack of Equipment available when it was originally built. The history of the place and dedication of those who revived it and are continuing to develop this great Abbey is truly amazing.
