Rijksmuseum Twenthe

Reviewed By WorldTravelOne - Breukelen Ut

We never knew about this gem of Enschede, but the Rijksmuseum Twenthe deserves to be on your list if you love art and enjoyed the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The museum is spacious and much of what you see is a real gift of the late Jan Herman van Heek (a succesful textile entrepreneur and his family) to the city of Enschede, the Dutch people and to visitors from all over the world. Jan Herman van Heek was born in Enschede on 20 October 1873 and died in Doetinchem on 25 January 1957. The museum is very spacious and has lots of important pieces. You will easily spend hours there. We will come back to this museum in the future.

This place is a must, when you area. Within a few kilometres from the village of De Lutte, you find this large, green park. The area has various easy walking tours. (3, 5 and 6km loops I believe), that take you through woods and sandy areas with the painteresque river Dinkel running through it. The place has a camping, various nice restaurants, various recreationsl areas, etc. Recommended any time of year.

Burg Bentheim

We did not enter this early medieval hill Castle, but just the old church at the entrance. Beautiful setting as can be seen on the painting by Jacob van Ruisdael (1653). Reading about it again I think we should have entered, because this is quite some historical site dating back to the 11th century.

Lovely sauna park! Just renovated, so everything is new and modern. A big variation in sauna types, so you can enjoy a variety of experiences. The ambiance is almost sereen, beautifull garden to walk in or an open fire for colder days. Pool inside and out and massages or other body treatments are also possible, which is a bonus. Staff is friendly and discrete, but also humoristic. The Aufguss is amazing and is (among others) offered with one of my favorites: honey scrub. Food and drinks are also nice and not your standard German menu. Spend an entire day there with my friend and could easily have made it 2 :)

De Lonneker Molen

Reviewed By Jessica M - Paris, France

Stopped by the Lonneker Molen (windmill) whilst on a bike ride through the Overjissel countryside today. The windmill is historical and has unique properties, such as thatching on top of a brick structure. In addition to walking around the outside it is possible to visit three floors of the four-floor windmill and walk around the upper part as well. The private tour includes demonstrations on the complete workings of the mill and can be in English. Very informative and interesting. The shop on the first floor sells stone ground grains and mixes made at the mill and from products by local farmers. Recommended.

It's a very nice forest area. Perfect for hikes. You can wander hours in this area if you like. The watch tower is fun to go up to (25m+ high) and have a nice view. Beceause losser is one of the higher places in Holland you can see in this area is the left overs of the sea covering this land. It's pretty much all white sand in the forest. Animal friendly and populair by dog walkers.

Museum Twentse Welle

Reviewed By Zoltán V - Enschede, The Netherlands

This museum gives a comprehensive review of the history of Twente (a region in East-Netherlands) from the geological times to the very recent events. It is presented with a good taste and the balance of topics and times. The permanent exhibition is well-sized, you can spend 2-3 hours without ever getting bored - and you will still discover many details when you later re-visit it.
