Last summer I took my four grandkids for a truly wonderful day out to see these magnificent birds fly so close over our heads. It was brilliant, the staff were good and very helpful and this year I am taking a group from a club for the experience too! Well worth it.

Sacromonte e Santuario Madonna del Sasso

Reviewed By cj05black - Province of Pordenone, Italy

This Abbey and its setting is a feast for the eyes and the soul, too. The beauty of the well preserved frescoes and sculptured bible scenes in it are only rivaled by the glorious panorama of the city on the lake beneath, nestled on the foot of the mountain. The church and the Abbey is easily accessible and some of the works can be admired even on days, when it is closed for viewing. The silver hearts on the church walls, dedicated to the Madonna from grateful pilgrims for answered prayers, are something special I hadn't seen before. The Chirch is not difficult to find and visit. One can walk to it from the city, but this option is for the fit only. For the less athletic among us, there is the Funicular departing every 15 mins. The penultimate stop is for the Abbey. At the last stop there is a restaurant, where visitors could get meals and refreshments, while admiring the view below.

We visited with a 6 year old child and she was given a treasure hunt map at the cashdesk which allowed us to explore the area with some prize at the end. The view is beautiful, there are several restaurants. We did a hike from Cimetta to Cardada and it was ok with a child.

Cimetta

Reviewed By Old_Waspy - Ilminster, United Kingdom

Getting to the Cimetta (1671 m) involves a funicular train ride (to Orselina), a cable car (to Cardada) and a final chair lift to the top. If the weather is clear it is worth every penny as the views are magnificent. The train runs from the town centre. There is a restaurant or cafe at each stage of the journey. You can walk or cycle it if you wish. Very highly recommended.

Lungolago Di Ascona

Reviewed By Bandit-One - Lucerne, Switzerland

Ascona is always worth a visit. Been here a couple of times and still amazes every time. The town itself is a sight on its own right. Strolling through the narrow streets and lanes is just a nice thing to do. The old town's not that big, so you surely won't get lost. Besides the old town the Promenade on the lake - the Lungolago - is what you come for. It's not the biggest or longest Promenade, but it's one of the most beautiful. The Lago Maggiore is just a wonderful lake and you can see to the other side: Italy. Take a walk, take a boat...take a break and enjoy this wonderful Promenade. There's plenty of space, since the Lungolago is very wide. Along the way a good number of restaurants and of course some souvenir shops. But also a nice park at the southern end and lots of benches to stretch your legs. From the official photo op on the northern end you really can get nice pics of the Lungolago with the colourful buildings backing it up. If you're around here already, don't miss out on Locarno, another beautiful town in Ticino.
