Kurokawa Onsen

Reviewed By BelindLow

We took a highway bus (2 & half hours) from Kumamoto Bus Terminal. We booked the seats online in Singapore through the Japan BusOnline portal. Remember to bring a copy of your bus e-ticket. Yoy can also get the bus ticket at the bus tetminal at least one day before departure during office hours. We spent 2 days at Kurokawa to do the walking routes. All routes are about 4 km return. Route 1 is the easiest & you get to enjoy streams, brooks & forest scenery. Route 1 has some slight inclines but not difficult. Very scenic mountain views. On a clear day, you can see Mt Aso. Route 2 was closed during our time of visit. Most people go to Kurokawa to do onsen hopping. You can get the pass at the Information Centre for 1300 yen & choose 3 onsens from a selection of 20 plus onsens to enjoy. Do note that the onsens are spread out so you need to do a fair bit of walking to onsen hop. We did not buy the pass as we're happy just using the onsen at our ryokan Ichinoi. When we were walking route 1, we stopped over at Yamamizuki Onsen for a quick dip to refresh ourselves. It has lovely riverside open baths. Entrance fee was 600 yen. Bring your own towel or pay 300 yen for one at the counter. There is a free shuttle back to village centre every 30 mins. The village comes alive with day trippers from Fukuoka, Yufuin & other cities in the late morning. There is a small street to browse the little shops & have lunch. If you are staying overnight, best to have meal plans with your ryokan as all the shops & eateries close at around 5 pm.

Kannawa Steam Bath

Reviewed By JoanaS388 - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

This was an extraordinary experience in itself! This is was a steam room like no other! It is really really hot so not for the faint hearted! The lady at the Onsen although could not speak well English we were able to understand each other. Man one side (left) women on the other side (right). Once in, it is the same rules as in a Japanese public bath, you wash yourself and then get dressed in a yukata (sort of casual home kimono) and then a lovely lady guides you to the steam room (picture attached) Wow! It is hot and very narrow, so you enter almost on your knees and lie down on a bed of grassy straw for 8 min. The lady has a timer so she will let you know when to get out but you can also leave earlier if you need to. But wow, when you are in it is a great feeling of calm and relaxation. This is a really local and very Japanese onsen. LOVED IT!

City Spa Tenku

Reviewed By myyellowluggage - Brussels, Belgium

I really enjoyed the City Spa, it is situated on the last floor of a central hotel, just next to Oita Station. The price is very reasonable (1900 Yen for complete access Spa+Healing corner / 1500 Yen for spa access only). The spa is very clean and well organized, no need of additional bath/swim clothes or towels, everything is included in the price. You have a two floor spa with inside and outside hot bath, the outside hot bath is particularly impressive as you re on the roof top and can enjoy the pittoresque view. You need to follow accurately the rules mentioned at reception. You can't wear any clothes in inside hot baths but you have to wear a bath cloth for external hot bath (all provided). You will also find a dry and wet sauna and a healing corner with a smooth sauna (huge place to lay and relax at a pleasant temperature), a salt sauna and lounge to rest (specific clothes provided). Of course, you have showers with free beauty products. I spent 2 hours in the City Spa and really enjoyed every minute.
