Healthy Land Tamatebako Onsen

Reviewed By kimitakas - Taichung, Taiwan

It is the most spectacular open-air bath that I hadn’t seen before. Healthy Land Tamatebako is a natural hot spring, where the guests can enjoy a magnificent view of sea and Mt. Kaimondake. You feel as if you were bathing in the middle of ocean, as your sight can be extended to the horizon.

Myoban Onsen

Reviewed By 12_funh

We only did a day trip at JPY1200/pax for the onsen, did not stay at their ryokan. It is near bus stop but to note the timing of bus intervals as they are not frequent. Great onsen with magnificent view of Beppu Myoban Bridge. Unfortunately, ladies onsen was not on the first floor where the outdoor pools are on the day I was there (they will rotate between male and female baths). I have been to more beautiful and larger onsens in Japan before but Ebisuya gives the guests a relaxing feel especially the resting area at a corner of the lobby with resting chairs, smell of aromas, magnificent view of the bridge. There are some cute cat crops you can use to take souvenir photos too.

Sunamushi Kaikan Saraku

Reviewed By JindyJohn

The hot sand bath is a pleasurable and relaxing experience. For a novice the whole process is detailed in notices and diagrams, so it is easy to follow and avoid faux pas. First the change rooms with lockers where you strip off and put on the colourful yukata provided. Then go out to the beach where you lie down in a scrape in the sand with a towel wrapped around your head (bring your own to save 200 yen). An attendant shovels warm sand over you. Make a note of the time. Ten minutes is recommended but you can choose your own limit. After that it's back into the main building, off with the yukata, sluice off the sand and relax in the hot pool, and should you choose, a sauna and a cold plunge pool. Definitely better than my first experience at Beppu, where I was miffed at being turned out of the sand after ten minutes, just when I was enjoying it.

Onoaida Onsen

Reviewed By 590jhl - Seoul, South Korea

Old wooden onsen with just several small tubs. But, it makes this place special like a place in dramas. - The location is south of Yakushima. Bus stop #98. And it's 10~15 min from there. Travelers must keep track of bus schedule if they don't have cars. - Most visitors seemed to be residents nearby. They came with cars. And very few Japanese tourists. - The water is very hot and it's rare for indoor hot springs. - There's one compartment between men's and women's. It can't cut sounds nor split water. - I liked the owner's cats, too.

Kurokawa Onsen

Reviewed By BelindLow

We took a highway bus (2 & half hours) from Kumamoto Bus Terminal. We booked the seats online in Singapore through the Japan BusOnline portal. Remember to bring a copy of your bus e-ticket. Yoy can also get the bus ticket at the bus tetminal at least one day before departure during office hours. We spent 2 days at Kurokawa to do the walking routes. All routes are about 4 km return. Route 1 is the easiest & you get to enjoy streams, brooks & forest scenery. Route 1 has some slight inclines but not difficult. Very scenic mountain views. On a clear day, you can see Mt Aso. Route 2 was closed during our time of visit. Most people go to Kurokawa to do onsen hopping. You can get the pass at the Information Centre for 1300 yen & choose 3 onsens from a selection of 20 plus onsens to enjoy. Do note that the onsens are spread out so you need to do a fair bit of walking to onsen hop. We did not buy the pass as we're happy just using the onsen at our ryokan Ichinoi. When we were walking route 1, we stopped over at Yamamizuki Onsen for a quick dip to refresh ourselves. It has lovely riverside open baths. Entrance fee was 600 yen. Bring your own towel or pay 300 yen for one at the counter. There is a free shuttle back to village centre every 30 mins. The village comes alive with day trippers from Fukuoka, Yufuin & other cities in the late morning. There is a small street to browse the little shops & have lunch. If you are staying overnight, best to have meal plans with your ryokan as all the shops & eateries close at around 5 pm.
