Tenzan Tohji-kyo

Reviewed By HeloiseEliot - Aveiro, Portugal

After being refused from another onsen because in a group of 5 I was the one with tattoos (although very small), and not being allowed in even if covered them up, Tenzan accepted us and were nothing but friendly and kind. So nice and relaxing, despite having (unknowingly) made the mistake of starting with the last "pool" - the hottest. It was an incredible experience to quietly sit outside, in the rain, surrounded by bamboo and with your body submerged in warm water. Beware low blood pressure people! It will make it even lower so be very careful - you will feel dizzy/lightheaded in there and after. A little reading break in the nap/resting room is mandatory, where you can quietly enjoy the sound of the river running through a very small waterfall just outside two massive windows. Very beautiful views. A must-do for those who enjoy doing nothing! Afterwards we tried the food at the restaurant which was equally nice (see photos). First photo was in the morning, last photo was the time we left. That's how good of a time we spent there. Highly recommend!

When I realized I had a day in Japan all to myself and no appointments, I searched around for massage and hot springs locations. I found EnoSpa by chance and vacillated for a few days before booking a 90 minute massage and dinner. The experience turned into a wonderful choice and 6 hours of (mostly) pure bliss. I enjoyed the Oneson baths (could have used a bit more introduction/directions on how that all worked - but I don't think I offended anyone :) a 90 minutes massage at the Beng Teng spa (+ a nap), the heated pools, the resaturant, and the overlook on the 5th floor. The massage and spa were very comfortable and exactly as I had hoped. But the best part of the trip had to be watching the sun set over Mt. Fuji from the heated pools. Maybe part of it was not trying to catch it on a camera (none allowed!) and knowing that what I caught in my memory was all I would have. The twilight was spectacular as the hawks circled the cliff above and the ocean shore, the moon rose and the stars began turning on one by one -- and I enjoyed it all from the pools. I was there by myself and part of the magic was that I felt no need to converse or discuss it with anyone. It was lovely and peaceful and I never wanted to leave! This is definitely a recommendation to everyone I know to visit. I hope to go again myself when next I am in Tokyo.
