Kurama Onsen

Reviewed By 692kerryc - Shanghai, China

There are outdoor bath and indoor bath provided. It's a superb deal... I went to Kurama just for the autumn leaves and decided to have a spontaneous bath. Really happy I gave it a try. It's public but when I was there on a weekday, there were no more than 5 people. It isn't a big place, but good enough for me. For a real japanese experience yet not costing you much, this is the place to go. Tips for anyone who stay in Kyoto area for 3 days up : go get yourself a Kansai Thru pass, it will save a lot for the transport. Especially you will visit many spots in Kyoto where they are usually far from each other.

Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen is located just one hour’s drive from Nagano City in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture – a charming hot spring village located at the foot of Kenashi-yama Mountain which is home to around 4,000 people. The village is said to date back to 8th century but has been renowned for it’s hot springs and traditional inns since the Edo period. More recently Nozawa has also gained popularity as a ski area that features a great variety of terrain and amazing snow that’s hard to match.

Nozawa Onsen is the most gorgeous little ski village, comes to life from 2pm. Skiing is awesome. Great places to eat. Easy to get around by foot. Loving our stay.

Healthy Land Tamatebako Onsen

Reviewed By kimitakas - Taichung, Taiwan

It is the most spectacular open-air bath that I hadn’t seen before. Healthy Land Tamatebako is a natural hot spring, where the guests can enjoy a magnificent view of sea and Mt. Kaimondake. You feel as if you were bathing in the middle of ocean, as your sight can be extended to the horizon.

Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is a traditional Japanese hot spring town located 2.5 hours from Kyoto and Osaka by JR express train. The town boasts 7 public hot springs and over 80 ryokans (traditional inns). Guests staying a ryokan get a free pass to the onsens. They can experience wearing traditional yuakta and strolling around this quaint town.

I visited this venue after seeing it on NHK I can say it definitely feels like it’s gone back in time. It has at least seven onsens If you stay in the hotels in the area you get a pass which can visit all 7 for free. The shops offer different things for sale but they can be quite expensive as they are handmade items. The restaurant is closed at two different times once it will close around 5 pm and the other set opens around 8 pm and closes at 11 They seem to be old time activities to do like shooting corks out of a gun to get prizes It is Worth coming here especially during night time as it is beautiful and if your hotel allows it as mine wanted, you can wear the traditional Japanese garments to walk around the streets in The train station is called Kinosaki And if you have the JR pass the trip is mostly going to be free for you via train

Shika no Yu

Reviewed By cynthiac627

I'd been wanting to go here for a while as a day trip but heard it was too difficult. It's not. Just take the Shinkasen or the Shinjuku Liner and your up there in no time. So I decided to spend the night in this area...not my best choice. If your in this area Shika no Yu is excellent. Great sulfur waters, beautiful and clean. The history dates back to the 7th century and the onsen is old, rustic and charming. Nearby, there is a temple and the Valley of Jizo which you can enjoy in about 2 hours. If your an Onsen buff this is not to be missed. If your into 1st class and luxury...probably not the place to go. If you stay in the area nearby Nasu Harvest or Nasu Sanraku are very nice.

Kusatsu Onsen

Reviewed By chenoa

We have been to Kinosaki Onsen and enjoyed the onsen-hopping culture over there. In Kusatsu, onsen-hopping is not as flourishing. Kinosaki is the up-market cousin, attracting more foreign tourists than locals with its old charm - traditional buildings lining a beautiful canal that runs through the town, and many establishments offering boutique ryokan experiences complete with beautiful kimono or yukata for that instagram, and 7 public onsens free to visit as long as you are staying in 1 of the town's ryokans or hotels. Kusatsu, while its beauty pale in comparison with the yubatake in its town centre, appeals with more modest establishments and affordability. Unknown to many visitors, there are 3 public baths (free) to hop around. However, these baths do not have showering facilities. It is thus recommended that one stays in a ryokan or hotel that has a good onsen facility. This "poorer" cousin is actually richer. This area's springs' water is high in mineral content. Comparing the water quality, I would say that I enjoyed Kusatsu's water more. Both towns are accessible by JR transport. Kinosaki has its own train station (Kinosaki Station) while Kusatsu needs a JR bus connection from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station. The JR bus timing coincides with the trains' arrival so connection is not a problem. The JR pass covers the JR bus from Nagonohara-Kusatsuguchi to Kusatsu Onsen. Winter and summer offers different scenery and atmosphere. Since summer is the low season, the town is relatively quiet. You can enjoy the onsen better without the crowd and at a discount off peak season prices.

Myoban Onsen

Reviewed By 12_funh

We only did a day trip at JPY1200/pax for the onsen, did not stay at their ryokan. It is near bus stop but to note the timing of bus intervals as they are not frequent. Great onsen with magnificent view of Beppu Myoban Bridge. Unfortunately, ladies onsen was not on the first floor where the outdoor pools are on the day I was there (they will rotate between male and female baths). I have been to more beautiful and larger onsens in Japan before but Ebisuya gives the guests a relaxing feel especially the resting area at a corner of the lobby with resting chairs, smell of aromas, magnificent view of the bridge. There are some cute cat crops you can use to take souvenir photos too.
