It is a small museum of the writer. Pretty interesting but unfortunately there are only limited English signs and descriptions.

Sakura blosoomed well around late April to early May each year in Kitakami . Long lines of keinobori hung across the river and rows of attractive cherry trees with treasure boats sailing up and down the river. Lots of people strolled underneath the sakura tunnel and occasionally you could see red horse carts leisurely carried groups of people from one place to the other. This place is very popular amoung the local people and easy to reach from the JR station. Do experience the fun early next year.

This small city offers a look at the sites and area where one of Japan's great writers and scholars once lived. It is worth the visit if you have extra time to travel by train or bus to the area from Mroioka if walking and visiting a laid back city is what you want to do. Also, you can stop at the local department store to enjoy a tall ice cream one last time before it closes its' doors in June, 2016. Be sure to get their early in the day for it is a one to two hour wait at times due to the heavy traffic by people who want to enjoy this wonderful attraction before it closes for good. The walk along the small creek is also enjoyable where you can see pieces of metal art devoted to Kenj's writing.. A very friendly village where people greeted us and helped us as we needed it...

I recommend going up the path near the parking lot (Kawaranobo- steeper, slightly more challenging, along the water, rocky) and down the other route (Odagoe-flatter, rockier, more open, ladder section, plants) to give you more variety. Although this means you walk back along the road for about 30 minutes, I think it is worth it. Hayachine tends to get cloudy around noon, so you want to have an early start (around 7 at least) for a good view and a parking spot. No toilets on the mountain after the parking lot but they do sell portable toilets... I've never used one so I can't say what they are like.
Hayachine is famous for its endemic species, so keep an eye out for the flowers, especially the Edelweiss!

花巻農業高校の敷地内にありますが、駐車場は県道２１４号線と２９４号線が交差するＴ字路の北側にあり分かり難いです。高校敷地内は勿論駐車厳禁、学校が休みの時は門が閉まっています。トナリはいわて花巻空港。運が良ければ飛行機の離着陸に遭遇できるかも。雨にも負けず、風にも負けず、雪にも夏の暑さにも負けぬと言いたいところですが、１２月～３月までは休館のようなので、訪問時期は考慮したほうが良さげです。

記念館裏の「山荘」が全てを語ります、先ずここに足をお運びになったら如何でしょう。
智恵子夫人に先立たれ、空襲で東京のアトリエは焼失、花巻の疎開先(宮沢賢治の実家)でまたもや空襲に会い…云わば失意のうちに流れ流れて辿り着き７年間を過ごされた小屋。
それはもう粗末な土壁造りの「触れなば落ちん」風情ですので、今はそれを覆う建屋によって大事に守られ、ガラス越しにしか見られませんが往時の暮らしぶりが窺えます。
小屋の前の光太郎が自給自足をされたという畑も綺麗に整備され花が植えられ、周りの木々も野放図ではなく大事に手が入れられ、蛙が鳴き、小鳥がさえずり、里から遠く離れて風雪厳しい土地での一人暮らしはご不自由だったろうけれども…ここは或る意味 理想郷イーハトーブ だったのかなと思えます。
しかし、どうして花巻出身者でも岩手出身者でもない東京人の、疎開で７年間移り住んだだけという光太郎の足跡をかくも宝物のように大事になさるのでしょう、盛岡市内にある啄木新婚の家も本当に昔の極ありきたりの簡素な家なのに今も大事に保管されてます、ましてやこちらは小屋ですから気の遠くなる程の掛かりでしょうが、文化人を大事になさる岩手県の県民性からなんでしょうね。
記念館には彫刻や達筆な書がありますが、私が最も魅かれたのは何気なくケース置かれている智恵子の小さな切り絵の蟹、何と鋭い感覚の才気あふれる作品でしょう燦然と光り輝いてます～光太郎の彫刻は朴訥でリアルで品があって正直な作品だなぁとは思いますが、のけ反るような感動は覚えません。
華やかな事もお辛い事も一杯あった光太郎さんは情に厚い花巻市民に守られて今此処に安らかに眠ってらっしゃいます。
アクセス
大変不便なので、花巻観光協会が主催する文化タクシーの４～９月定期的に出ている「どんぐり号」と云うレトロジャンボタクシーを利用しました。３時間ほど花巻観光が出来て\2000と格安、運転手さんも博識でご丁寧、お薦めします。

吉屋信子氏の著書「私の見た人」に新渡戸稲造氏が登場～女学校一年生の時に学校の講堂で講演されたらしい、日本人離れした長身美丈夫の堂々たるモーニング姿の氏の容姿に先ず感嘆。その時の話の内容は「あなた方は良妻賢母になる前に、一人のよい人間にならなければ‥」というもので、女史はそれに天の神の声を聞くように恍惚とされたようです～今なら常識的で何でもないことでしょうが封建思想で凝り固まった時代でのことですから女学生達はいたく感動されたでしょうね…このエピソードだけで新渡戸氏の魅力が降るようにイメージ出来ます、現代の言葉では「神」でしょうか。
江戸末期に盛岡でご誕生、東京英語学校に入学、洗礼を受けてクリスチャンに、東大入学、私費でアメリカに留学、アメリカ人メリーさんとご結婚～これだけでも当時としては目も眩むような「開拓精神」、生涯を国際親善、教育、農政、著述等多岐にわたってご活躍。
新渡戸家のご先祖は士族で、花巻や十和田市を大々的に開墾された代々の名士(二百二十八年間にわたる地域貢献)、記念館には開拓の大きなジオラマが作られている、入って最初に見るビデオはその生涯を上手にまとめてあるので必見、職員の方による館内の解説も要を得て分かりやすい。

5月23日に訪問したが少し早くて屋外のバラはまだでしたが、ハウスの中は綺麗に咲いていました。この時期だから無料でした。次回はバラ祭りの時期に訪問したな！

小高い丘にあります。
ここに羅須地人協会(現在は県立花巻農業高校内に移築)があったのですねぇ…感慨一入。
賢治にまつわる観光施設はとても多いのですが、そんな騒々しい施設に行くよりも、喧騒とは無縁のこちらから見る花巻の自然や実際に住まれた家(羅須地人協会)を訪ねる方がより理解を深められるかなと思います。
雨ニモマケズの詩の真意は私には分かりません。
