Sjomanstornet

Sjömanstornet (The Seaman's Tower) at the Maritime Museum (sjofartsmuseum), next to Stigbergstorget was built in memory of deceased marines of the First World War. Their names and the ships they served on are inscribed at the foot of the tower, which was inaugurated in 1933. Visitors have to walk up 139 steps to the top of the tower where the five-metre statue Kvinna vid havet ("Woman by the Sea) stands.

Non-Violence staty ”The Knotted Gun”

Reviewed By royandjeanette

We came across this amazing sculpture whilst looking round Gothenburg so we took a picture to research it later. We were surprised to find that it’s a bronze sculpture by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd of an oversized colt Python 357 magnum revolver with knotted barrel and muzzle pointing upwards. Carl made this sculpture after John Lennon was murdered in 1980. We were memorised by it and the powerful message of non-violence. There are currently 31 copies of the sculpture around the world. Well worth seeing.

Vrango

Jump on 1 boat (or 2.. there are several options) from Göteborg city center, admire the beautiful scenery that the south islands archipelago offers on the trip down... and stop in Vrångö for a few hours. We took 2 boats to get there, approx 1 hour 15 minutes. And 1 boat back but it was much slower (1 hour 40 minutes...). We didn’t have to change at least. Vrångö is not a big island, you can easily do the few walks that are recommended, I believe the one that goes around the south part of the island is approx 2km, the one at the north is 3-4km. We went straight through as we had been told there was a really nice playground in the center of the island and we were travelling with 2 little girls (2 & 3 years old). Indeed, there is, and it is very nice! So they enjoyed a bit of play time there before we walked up to the little Swedish red house that you will as you walk towards the other side of the island. Not the easiest path to find, in between houses, but locals will direct you. Definitely worth the few steps that lead you to it for unbelievable views and photo opportunities. Lunch (fresh seafood and the best fish & chips) is at Fiskeboa. Only open in summer I believe. And then, make sure you go on the little 1.5km digestive walk (Tärnstigen) - a treasure. Boat back (1 hour and 40 minutes as I mentioned earlier) was at 2:20pm. The island has no cars... just small mopeds, it’s a beautiful day getaway. Definitely my favourite day in Sweden.

Lilla Bommen is the essentially a small harbour full of boats with some lovely scenery including the ‘lipstick’ building and the opera house. We had a lovely wander around this area early one morning. Very peaceful.

Gotaplatsen

Reviewed By gkw09 - Cambridge, United Kingdom

Göteborg, initially, confused me as to where it’s city centre truly is. For me, it’s a large city spanning a good deal of space with no direct centre and numerous small hubs and collections of shops and restaurants throughout. However, upon finding Gotaplatsen, this felt more where all the action can be found. The long boulevard type street with a museum atop some steps and grand Poseidon statue is a hive for people to eat, drink and shop. There are two great water features and lots going on. Be sure to visit this area of Göteborg.
