Galloway Red Kite Trail

Reviewed By FMW13 - Irvine, United Kingdom

Haven’t been to the feeding station as the Kites are easily seen locally. But if you pay, you’ll see many dozens from their one viewpoint. Drive or cycle from Ringford (off A75) to Laurieston and you’re pretty much guaranteed to see plenty of Red Kites. The fields had been recently ploughed & dozens of birds were feeding on the bare soil or wheeling overhead very close by. It’s a quiet road with places to stop, and signed the “Red Kite Trail”. Or walk up the hill to the Red Kite view point by taking the path directly opposite the Loch Ken Caravan Park (public car park just off the A713). Better still, stay on the campsite and hear the birds right overhead as you sit outside. Or go to Threave Castle near Castle Douglas at the right time of year (say, April to early August) to see Kites - but also Osprey.
