Ely Cathedral

With its unique 14th century octagonal lantern tower, Ely Cathedral is counted among the wonders of the medieval world. Much of the Cathedral is over 900 years old and it offers a rich architectural and historical experience, including the sumptuous 13th century Quire and beautiful 14th century Lady Chapel, the largest in the UK.

Ely Cathedral is a sublime experience. You can be adventurous and climb the roof and see the octagon, you can marvel at the colours and devotional aspects of the stained glass museum, or just be amazed by vaulted ceilings and the purity of the Lady Chapel. Check the website and go to evensong to gain an appreciation of the purity of the human voice and the tradition of sacred music.

Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve

Reviewed By X1509WQdaveh - Colchester, United Kingdom

As National Trust members, the missus and I are drawn to places where we do not have to pay to get in. A short trip by motor car from Cambridge, we headed Wicken Fen driving across the flats of Cambridgeshire, overwhelmed by the amount of sky. On arrival, the first thing we did after the obligatory visit to the toilets was to book onto the boat trip. After a sandwich and a cup of tea, we joined our fellow mariners and walked down to the launch, the skipper talking about the fen and the way it was worked in the past. Once on board, a gentle cruise down the lode was a delight, with the skipper’s on-Board commentary providing a lot of information. Back on land, we continued our exploration of the Board walks, taking in a number of bird watching hides and a wind pump. We saw birds and butterflies, reeds and sedge as well as trees and other nature stuff. Finally, there was a visit to a Fenman’s cottage, preserved to be as it was. Very quaint, interesting and made me happy to be living in the 21st century.

Oliver Cromwell's house was directly opposite our Poets House Hotel and Restaurant and we were welcomed by enthusiastic and helpful staff who carried out the correct Covid measures. With our information unit in hand my partner and I set off on the 45 minute tour (longer if you press the optional information buttons) We found the tour very informative and the rooms really set the scene. We highly recommend a visit Ian

The sound system is great and the seats are very comfortable, making that longer film endurable. Free parking here too, which is a bonus.
