Ebensee is a market town in the Traunviertel region of the Austrian state of Upper Austria, located within the Salzkammergut Mountains at the southern end of the Traunsee. The regional capital Linz lies approximately 90 km (56 mi) to the north, nearest towns are Gmunden and Bad Ischl. The municipality also comprises the Katastralgemeinden of Langwies, Oberlangbath, Rindbach, Kohlstatt and Roith.

We were on a road trip out of Bad Goisern and came upon Ebensee. This place is incredible. We pulled off at the marina and parked for free and just sat on the dock breathing in the clean air and taking in the unbelievable views. There was a free public restroom by the marina and when we were there, there were no tourists, no shops, just complete silence. On our next trip to Austria we will be staying in this area, it is that breath taking.

We've made a wonderful trip to those to small romantic lakes. We were with our 2 years old daughter and we made the round, which took us 4 hours ( with the speed of the baby). It is a wonderful place to have a refreshing swimming. It is a perfect place to dive and snorkeling under water. If you plan on swimming advised to take shoes for water as the bottom is covered stones. There is a small cafe on the beach , but you can not take away anything, so better to bring with you drinks and food. We were only few days around, but came twice to swim in the clearest water I saw in my life :)

Let's start our journey from Ebensee, from the bottom station of mountain lift. Let's buy tickets, and after a few minutes we will reach the top of the mountain, with a perfect view on Traunsee, Dachstein and many many others Mountains. On the top, we can just take a seat and observe landscape around us or start hiking (short distance - about 1 hour long, or a little bit more longer - more than 3 hours). Paths are wide and quite flat. This is absolutly good place to spend a whole day.

Discreet brown signs in German situated by the main road winding through the bucolic Austrian alpine town of Ebensee are easy to miss. Not many non-German speakers understand what is hidden behind “KZ-Gedenkstatte Ebensee”. We have driven through this town at the shores of the stunning lake of Traunsee many times and never noticed them. Only on a recent rainy day I noticed and decided to explore. I did vaguely know that KZ stands for Concentration camp. The brown signs took us through a labyrinth of narrow streets in a quaint Ebensee residential area to a little parking lot next to a playground situated next to a stone wall and a large area shaded by tall trees. I went to explore together with my 11 year old son. As we passed through the gate in the stone wall a vast area opened up before us. The mass grave and memorial to 8412 prisoners worked to death and murdered in the Ebensee Concentration Camp, one of the worst Nazi concentration camp which was part of the Mathausen network. My son and I read plaques telling horrific history of the camp and its slave laborers of whom 20 000 who were starved and tortured to death while digging enormous underground tunnels in the nearby mountain originally intended to hide the German Peenemunde V2-rockets. After the war the Ebensee community used the land of the former concentration camp for residential development. It took more than 50 years to establish an official memorial a museum to this horrific past. There are two sites to visit. The mass grave and the underground tunnels. It is not easy to find but for those who care worth the effort.

Dieses Museum ist etwas ganz Besonderes ...
Wir haben ja nicht viele Museen im Salzkammergut und dazu auch wenig "Tierisches". Präparatormeister Gratzer präsentiert hier eine Auswahl (Es gibt ja noch viel mehr Präparate!) seiner Schätze und auch eine jährlich wechselnde Sonderausstellung.
Besonders die aktuelle Sonderschau "Das Glück ist ein Vogerl" hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Die Präsentation der Tiere in den Dioramen ist wirklich toll. Grandios, wie man Käfer, Schmetterlinge und anderes Getier so "herrichten" kann. Es gibt auch einen Raum in dem ein Film vorgeführt wird.
Praktischerweise ist das Museum auch direkt an der B145 gelegen, Parkplätze gibt es vor dem Haus.
So ein Museum, dessen Erhaltung sicher eine Menge Geld kostet, sollte man unterstützen. Also: Hingehen! :)

Diese Sehenswürdigkeit, eine der spektakulärsten Tropfsteinhöhlen in den Nordalpen, in der Nähe von Ebensee muss man sich erwandern – es führt keine Straße zur Gasselhöhle in 1.250 m Höhe.
Die Wanderung startet beim Parkplatz “Schießstätte” in der Ortschaft Rindbach (447 m), etwas außerhalb von Ebensee. Zuerst geht es 25 Minuten auf einer Forststraße entlang des Rindbachs zum ersten Halt – dem Rindbach-Wasserfall. Über einen mit Geländer abgesicherten Steig gelangt man zur Brücke direkt über dem Wasserfall. Auf dem Forstweg wandert man dann weiter, sieht einige Bildbäume und biegt nach ca. 45 Min. links in das Tal ein, durch das der mit „424“ gekennzeichnete Steig zur Gasselhöhle führt. Nach ca. 2 ½ Stunden Gesamtgehzeit erreicht man die Gassel-Hütte (1.250 m), wo man auf eine Stärkung einkehren kann. Der Blick von der Terrasse auf die Wälder und Gipfel ist überwältigend.
In der Hütte kann man sich für eine Führung anmelden, der Höhleneingang ist gleich daneben. Über Holzstiegen geht es tief hinab in die Zauberwelt aus Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten. Der Führer des Höhlenvereines hat viele interessante Geschichten und auch die eine oder andere Anekdote zum Schmunzeln auf Lager. Die Höhe ist auf einer Länge von 250 m begehbar, die Führung dauert etwa 50 Min. Sie führt über die “Bärenhalle”, in der die Höhlenforscher Bären- und Elchknochen gefunden haben, zur “Geraden Kluft”. Später geht es über den “Olymp” und die “Hofingerhalle” zur "Großen Kanzelhalle". Hier sind die prächtigsten Tropfsteingebilde zu bewundern, unter ihnen die 6 m lange "Tropfsteinorgel" oder das "Schmuckkästchen".
Der Eingang zur Höhle war Jägern und Holzknechten schon seit längerer Zeit bekannt, doch erst 1918 begannen vier Ebenseer Forscher mit der Erschließung. Am 06. August 1933 wurde sie der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Sie diente im II. Weltkrieg der SS und später den Amerikanern als geheimer Stützpunkt. Dabei wurden einige Tropfsteingebilde zerstört.
Bei den seit 2006 laufenden Neuforschungen konnte die Länge der Höhle auf 4,5 km mehr als verdreifacht werden. Erst kürzlich wurde ein neuer unterirdischer Dom entdeckt, dessen Versinterungen in der Höhlenwelt einzigartig sind. Wahrscheinlich ist erst ein geringer Teil der Gasselhöhlen erforscht und es verbergen sich noch viele Überraschungen.
Sportliche können nachher noch in 20 Minuten auf den Gasselkogel (1.411 m) steigen. Dort bietet sich ein atemberaubendes Panorama über das nördliche Salzkammergut. Für den Rückweg kann man die Variante über die Spitzlsteinalm wählen. Dort grast eine Herde schottischer Hochlandrinder.
Die Schützhütte bei der Höhle ist ab Anfang Mai bis Mitte September am Wochenende (Sa., So.) und an Feiertagen geöffnet. Die Wanderung ist mit der Höhlenbesichtigung und der Besteigung des Gasselkogels eine Ganztagestour (ca. 6 Stunden). Die Wege sind gut markiert und auch familiengeeignet.

A warm welcome by local staff, many speak perfect English. A brilliant choice of wine, spirits and coffee. Food include pizza, toast and a huge cheeseboard. The owner has impressive tourist advice.
