Baien

Baien Confectionery is a shop of Japanese confections located along the front approach to the Dazaifu Tenmangu, a shrine where SUGAWARA no Michizane (a courtier-scholar in Heian Period) is honored as Tenjin-sama. Established in 1948, we have spent over 60 years creating our original confections. All of our confections are handmade in order to achieve delicate and elegant sweetness, and are given names related to the poems and legends of Tenjin-sama, or rituals in Dazaifu Tenmangu. "Hōman-zan", a soft egg jelly named after the sacred mountain of Hōman in Dazaifu, and "Uso-no-mochi", meaning "rice cake of bullfinches (they are the sacred birds of the Tenmangu shrines)", are some of our popular sweets loved by many since the beginning of our foundation. Through years of our quest to sweets perfection, our confections became the long time favorites of many people, including cultural celebrities and tea masters. We also had an honor to serve some of our confections to the royal family. "Hōman-zan" has been presented in Kashikodokoro (a sacred place in the imperial household), and "Tobiume" (Japanese dry candy named after the "Flying Plum" legend of Tenjin-sama) has been offered to the royal family on their visit to Dazaifu as well. Famous temples and shrines including Dazaifu Tenmangu also favored our confections for their tea ceremonies and gifts. Many others favored as souvenirs of Fukuoka, or a presents to their loved ones. At the shop, you can purchase our classic confections and seasonal offerings. We look forward of your visit and orders sincerely. Baien Confectionery Purveyor to Dazaifu Tenmangu
