Dalkey (/ˈdɔːkiː/; Irish: Deilginis, meaning "thorn island") is one of the most affluent suburbs of Dublin, and a seaside resort southeast of the city, and the town of Dun Laoghaire, in Ireland. It was founded as a Viking settlement and became an active port during the Middle Ages. According to chronicler John Clyn (c.1286–c.1349), it was one of the ports through which the plague entered Ireland in the mid-14th century. In modern times, Dalkey has become a seaside suburb that attracts some tourist visitors. It has been home to writers and celebrities including Jane Emily Herbert, Maeve Binchy, Hugh Leonard, Bono, Van Morrison and Enya. The village and broader area lie within the jurisdiction of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

A very nice person, who will tell you about the history off Dalkey island... and more :-) For 8.00€ he will bring you to the little island and will come and get you when you are ready. Just go and stand on the concrete stairs, enjoy the seals and wave at him ;-)

This is a place that is great to visit over and over. It’s a history lesson! The old church and graveyard are accessed via the Heritage Centre. Great castle to take photo’s. Recommended.

We took a kayak tour out to the island. It was a beautiful sunny morning when we were there so we got some amazing views back over Dublin from the island. The island itself is great to visit as well as you are only joined with a couple of other people and the goats and rabbits that live on the island. Well worth seeing.

Very original feel to this little harbour that’s overlooked by Bullock Castle. Boat rental available. Saw some seals in the harbour the other night.
