What to do and see in Central, China: The Best Concerts & Shows

May 18, 2021 Sheron Bogner

Delectable dim sum, floating islands, and a one-of-a-kind skyline are just some of Hong Kong’s unique features. Get an eyeful of traditional Chinese architecture in Ngong Ping village, then take the tram to the tippity-top of Victoria Peak for unparalleled views. The rocks and gentle hills of Nan Lian Garden will bring you inner peace, as will a calming cup of tea in a Stanley café. Become one with everything at the Chi Lin Nunnery, a serene Buddhist complex.

The Riff

The Riff is Asia’s premier standup comedy club. It is Hong Kong’s only full-time comedy venue, and the first on the continent from Live Nation, the entertainment house behind the legendary Punchline Comedy Clubs in the US, home to giants including Dave Chappelle.

The Riff is in California Tower in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong, which makes it super convenient to stop in for a drink. They have a purpose-built showroom along with a separate bar that offers happy-hour specials, which make it affordable as well! The bonus is that the Wednesday and Sunday open mics are generally free, so it's a low-risk option just to see what's going on that week. I have been to a few of their shows as well, and they were super funny! Most of their headliner shows sell out at least a week in advance, so I would recommend booking ahead for those shows - otherwise, just stop in and see what they're up to!

We dropped by for a quick bite to eat on a Tuesday evening - although we were expecting it to be relatively quiet being a Tuesday night, we reserved a table in advance just in case. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly greeted at the door by a hostess, escorted to one of the several private enclaves, and subsequently personally welcomed by the Manager. The venue itself is quite extraordinary....quite mesmerizing to look over the room and the attention to detail.....lots of wood, iron, smelting tools, 'ovens' (private dining enclaves), and thousands of imitation butterflies adorn the ceiling....not to mention the hundreds of little iron fairies as the centerpiece of each table. They're available for sale for HKD 200 each should anyone wish to take one home as a souvenir). We only had time for couple of drinks and a light meal, but the F&B was excellent, and we look forward to sampling some of the cocktails on our next visit. A very 'Instagramworthy' experience!
