Caraguatatuba, widely known by its abbreviation Caraguá, is a city in the eastern part of the southern state of São Paulo in Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte. The population is 113,317 (2015 est.) in an area of 485.10 km². Caraguatatuba is the largest city of São Paulo north shore. The economy of the Caraguatatuba is driven by agriculture and tourism. The urban area and farmlands are within the coastline and valley areas, the majority of the northern part are heavily forested and rarely serves any roads to that area. The postal boundary dividing the 00000s and the 10000s lies to the southwestern boundary with Salesópolis.

Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar - Nucleo Caraguatatuba

O Núcleo Caraguatatuba surgiu em 1977, incorporado ao Parque Estadual Serra do Mar. A área do núcleo era categorizada como Reserva desde o ano de 1956. A reserva, em 1962, foi transformada no Parque Estadual de Caraguatatuba, ampliando seus limites. Seus 35.947 hectares representam pouco mais de 10% de todo o território do PE da Serra do Mar. Exuberantes paisagens formam os remanescentes de mata atlântica presentes no Núcleo, como os mananciais da represa de Paraibuna, as matas de encosta, os rios, as cachoeiras e os belíssimos cenários vistos da rodovia dos Tamoios e da estrada do Rio Pardo. Três municípios paulistas fazem parte do núcleo: Caraguatatuba, Natividade da Serra e Paraibuna. Seu nome, homônimo à cidade litorânea, tem referência na planta caraguatá (Bromelia pinguin), que significa “planta espinhosa” na língua tupi. O termo “tuba”, que equivale a “muito”, completa a palavra e seu sentido: região onde existem caraguatás em abundância.
