What to do and see in Cape Town Central, Western Cape: The Best Nature & Wildlife Areas

October 10, 2021 Renato Branum

Cape Town glistens at the southern toe of the African continent. Tourist brochure-views at Blaauwberg Beach and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are within easy driving distance of "The Mother City." The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve provides sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters. On a more somber note, travelers can visit Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years.

Signal Hill

Signal Hill is so named because it was a site for flying flags to communicate weather conditions, thus providing opportune vistas of spectacular views.

Staying in Cape Town, there are a few hikes and signal hill is a must, it's not hard at all. I started the hike at the Noon Gun, from there walk up to Signal Hill and watch the paraguilding, there are a few shops that sell water and ice creams as well. From there you have two choices hike back to Noon Gun or hike towards Lions Head and Table Mountain, just depends where you have your car parked. I took the bus so I continued on towards Lions Head and got the bus from there.

Our trip to this small Wetland reserve was an unexpected highlight of our trip to Cape Town. A beautiful setting, friendly staff and a handful of hides and a viewing tower. Could not believe how many interesting birds we saw. Had a great time and, to cap it all, it was free!! Loved it!

Beautiful national park with several areas to see. Be sure to take the cable or walk to the top of the mountain (good snackbar at base) ...and then visit the Cape of Good Hope sign to take a photo at the southernmost point in Africa.

World of Birds

Wild life sanctuary and home to a wide variety of bird life.

Reviewed By Zipmans - London, United Kingdom

Given some of the previous comments I was expecting animals to be kept in metal, dirty and smelly cages and I can say it is so far from that. The enclosures are as good as or possibly better than those I have visited in the UK and the animals looked in very good condition. The information describing the history of this place (originally set up to support the breeding programme of endangered species and then more as a sanctuary to support ill / injured animals) was really informative. Price: 130 Rand for adults and 50 Rand for children was great value for money Location: Not walkable; however easy to het there in the car and I did see the bus tour also stopping there Facilities: These are more than adequate (toilets, cafe, seating areas) Items to Note: - Some of the birds enclosures you walk into so if you have any bird phobia this is not for you - There are feeding times for monkies that involves the monkies being able the climb onto you. You are not allowed to reach out and touch them so if you have any kids that cannot control themeselves this is not for you - Parking is limited so I would suggest getting there early or late

Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve

A boutique safari lodge situated 2.5 hours from Cape Town offering tranquil overnight safari stays in a variety of accommodation types.

Reviewed By JulieB276 - London, United Kingdom

We chose Inverdoorm to introduce our family to safari and to celebrate 2 50th birthdays. We were based in Camps Bay so knew we would be limited. We drove ourselves but understand that a transfer is available. We arrived around 12 noon and was greeted with a smile and a cold drink. The setting is beautiful. We were told and was expecting it, that our rooms were not ready, so we went and had a drink by the pool bar before going to lunch, which again after reading reviews on TripAdvisor we were not really looking forward to it. What a fantastic surprise, it was delicious very well presented and the chicken pie. when we were told that our rooms were ready we were both angry and disappointed that the 4 rooms we reserved and asked for at the time of booking in December, were not together, a fact that for safety we wanted. After a while they did find us rooms way they were in twos, which was better than what was offered, I know this might seem petty but to us as a family with girls staying in a room together we wanted them near us. The lodge rooms were very clean and spacious, plenty of water which we were told if we needed more then just ask, only thing that was missing was a hair dryer, if we were staying more than one night, we would definitely need. The game drives themselves were excellent our ranger was great and we saw all the animals over the 2 drives we did. Evening meal was delicious and huge portions but it was very hot in the restaurant, which made us feel very sleepy and a bit sick so we felt we didn’t enjoy it as much as we could have. Overall a fantastic safari and it was definitely worth the trip from Cape Town.
