May 4, 2022 Misti Hsu

This Italian-speaking region in Southern Switzerland is on the border with Italy. Bellinzona is the capital, and Lugano is the most important city in the canton, known for its beautiful waterfront, steep hillsides and gorgeous lake views. Castelgrande is a lovely medieval castle overlooking the city that has recently been restored. The Centovalli Railway is a scenic train that operates between Locarno, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, traveling through the breathtaking "Hundred Valleys." Lake Como is nearby, the home of People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” George Clooney.

Cimetta

Getting to the Cimetta (1671 m) involves a funicular train ride (to Orselina), a cable car (to Cardada) and a final chair lift to the top. If the weather is clear it is worth every penny as the views are magnificent. The train runs from the town centre. There is a restaurant or cafe at each stage of the journey. You can walk or cycle it if you wish. Very highly recommended.

San Bernardino Pass in the Canton of Ticino Swiss Alps Switzerland is a stunning picturesque area that looks right out of a travel magazine. We were on our way to Lake Como Italy on our grand tour of every country that borders the alps. It is worth a drive thru this area we prefer the winding mountain roads to a tunnel.
