Festungsmuseum Heldsberg

The artillery fortress Heldsberg was part of the border fortifications in the Rhine Valley. Built into a rocky crest and with its four built-in guns of 7.5 cm it dominated the southern part of the Lake of Constance in the north and the bridges over the Rhine up to Montlingen in the south. Seven built-in machine guns and other infantry weapons as well as antitank guns in bunkers outside the fortification covered the approach. With galleries of 1000 m length and a height difference of 160 m, Heldsberg was one of the biggest border fortifications of Switzerland. The garrison counted 200, the one for exterior defence 400 hands. Constructed 1939 - 1941, operating until 1990, the fortress was handed over to the registered association Festungsmuseum Heldsberg in 1993.

Stiftsbibliothek

The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

The library is precious and one has to wear slippers they provide as the floor is being preserved with its lovely inlaid wood. The paintings and the books are breathtaking.

Kathedrale St.Gallen

The cathedral represents one of the last monumental Baroque monastic constructions in Europe. It was built from 1755 to 1767 under the direction of Vorarlberg native and master builder Johann Michael Beer. The choir stalls with 84 lovely carved seats and the historic organ are works of art in and of themselves. Every Tuesday, there is a Evening Prayer (Domvesper)at 5.30 P.M. The inside of the church is painted in vibrant colours and adorned with stucco, and the interior is decorated with numerous carvings. A serene atmosphere prevails in the church thanks to the soft lighting and malachite green stucco. After the secularisation of the Convent in 1805, the church became a parish church and 1847 at the same time cathedral of the new founded diocese. In 2013, the altar area was renewed. Especially impressive is the baptism fountain with the respecting of the frescos of the cupola. Beside the different liturgy Services and concerts there are also guided tours, for example from may to September every Saturday at 10.30 A.M. (Free admission, collect).

All of my St. Gallen reviews have the caveat that St. Gallen is nice, but not worth a separate trip. If it's on your way somewhere else it's a decent stop with a few things to see. This cathedral is spectacular, & the surrounding area nice to walk around in & explore. It was nice at night too.

Tamina Gorge

Reviewed By 910lauriel - Plymouth, United States

We got onto the Postbus at the train station which has automated pay parking stalls. It costs 11CHF for a round trip bus trip that’s payable to the driver in cash only. The alternative to getting there is the hike which is walking along the same road that the bus takes. We saw quite a few people walking, but the bus did get close to them at time due to the narrow width of the road. Once we arrived at the top, there is a restaurant with a pay station inside that accepts coins and bills (we had better luck with coins so try to have those). You receive a ticket that you scan at the entrance of the gorge to go through the turn style. There is not a place to buy tickets at the gorge itself. There was a full sit down restaurant and also a small café/snack bar. The snack bar had pizza and cheese plates but we didn’t see a menu posted (in English). The restaurant looked nice but we didn’t eat there. The building itself was quite lovely with a nice outdoor seating area. The gorge itself was amazing. Bring a raincoat if you don’t want to get wet as there’s so water dripping at times. Make sure to go all the way inside the gorge to the end of the trail to see the actual thermal water source & original tunnels. We were there 1.5 hours and didn’t have time to see the museum.
